Men’s Ice Hockey Shuts Out Buffalo State 2-0

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey shut out Buffalo State 2-0 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Saturday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (2-3-1, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) and Buffalo State (2-2-0, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) played a scoreless first period with Plattsburgh State holding a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.

In the second period, the Cardinals scored the only two goals of the night to make the score 2-0. 

Junior forward, and alternate captain, Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) scored Plattsburgh State's first goal of the night at 9:10 of the second period. After freshman forward Christian Thomas (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Topeka Pilots) forced a turnover in the Cardinals' defensive zone, the puck went to Drabin who skated it all the way into the Cardinals' offensive zone and he scored his first goal of the season with a low wrist shot. Thomas assisted on the play.

Less than five minutes later, junior forward Rich McCartney (Hershey, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution) scored his first goal of 2019-20 at 13:50 of the second period. Freshman forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres (OJHL) forced a turnover in the high slot in Buffalo State's defensive zone. McCartney got the puck and went in all alone on the goaltender, deking and then finishing through the five-hole. Tretowicz assisted on the play. 

Plattsburgh State's junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (2-3-1), the reigning PrestoSports SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week, made the two-goal lead stand as he recorded a season-high 39 saves for his first shutout of the season. With his performance, Poreda lowered his goals against average to 1.65 for the season, while improving his save percentage to .937. 

Emil Norrman (1-1-0) made 33 saves in net for Buffalo State.

Shots on goal were 39-35 in favor of Buffalo State.

The Cardinals went 0-of-2 on the power play and the Bengals finished 0-of-3.

Plattsburgh State next faces SUNY Potsdam in a SUNYAC game on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. Friday's game is on Poster Night and Canned Food Drive Night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.

Buffalo State plays at No. 2 SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m.
