PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The
Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team outshot The College at Brockport 30-18, but the Cardinals suffered a 3-1 setback in their first regular-season game of 2019-20 on Friday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State (0-1-0, 0-1-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference) and Brockport (1-0-0, 1-0-0 SUNYAC) played a scoreless first period with the Cardinals outshooting the Golden Eagles 10-4.
All of the goals in the game would be scored in the second period of play. At 1:14 of the period, Doc Gentzler gave Brockport a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles played the puck around in the Cardinal zone until a centering attempt was blocked by a Cardinal. However, the puck fortuitously bounced to Gentzler, who skated into the slot and scored with a low wrist shot. Connor Hutchins and Ryan Romeo assisted on the play.
Just over 5:00 later, Plattsburgh State would tie the game at 1-1 with a 4-on-4 goal, scored by sophomore defenseman
Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) at 6:46 of the second period. Araujo took a pass in the high slot from senior defenseman
Andrew Pizzo (Thorold, Ontario/Niagara University) and fired a wrist shot that went wide, but bounced hard off the boards behind the net and back to near the left face-off dot. Araujo got his own rebound and scored with a high wrist shot.
However, Brockport would score the final two goals of the second period and the game to make the final score 3-1 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Ethan Solat made the score 2-1 with a goal at the 7:20 mark. Positioned right in front of the Cardinal net, Solat took a centering pass from Jordan Renaud. Solat's initial shot was stopped but he banged home his own rebound, with Renaud and Gentlzer assisting on the goal. Then at the 10:40 mark of the second period, Mitchell Parsons scored the final goal of the game. A Cardinal turnover led to a 2-on-1 opportunity for the Golden Eagles. Hunter Laslo fed a pass across to Parsons, who scored high on the glove-side with a wrist shot.
Plattsburgh State outshot Brockport 8-2 in the third period and 30-18 in the game, but was unable to solve Brockport goaltender Matt Schneider (1-0-0), who made 29 saves on the night. Junior netminder
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (0-1-0) made 15 stops for Plattsburgh State.
The Cardinals went 0-of-3 on the power play and the Golden Eagles were 1-of-2 with the man advantage.
Plattsburgh State next faces No. 3 SUNY Geneseo in a SUNYAC game at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Brockport faces SUNY Potsdam in a SUNYAC game tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
