Weiner’s First Career Game-Winning Goal Helps Men’s Soccer to 1-0 Win Over The College at Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Freshman forward Cole Weiner (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) scored his first collegiate game-winning goal to lead Plattsburgh State men's soccer to a 1-0 win over The College at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Bob Boozer Field.

Weiner's team-leading fifth goal of the season, which was scored in the 77th minute, helped Plattsburgh State (5-6-0, 3-1-0 SUNYAC) record its second consecutive SUNYAC road victory, as the Cardinals had defeated SUNY Geneseo 2-1 in double overtime on Saturday. Weiner's goal came after the Cardinals forced a turnover off of a Brockport (6-5-1, 1-3-0) throw-in in the Cardinals' offensive third of the field. Senior midfielder Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) intercepted the throw-in and played the ball from the right sideline to freshman forward Alex Graci (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), who was in the middle of the field about 25 yards away from the net. Graci played a pass ahead to Wiener, who dribbled around a Brockport defender into the 18-yard box and scored with a low shot inside the right post.

Plattsburgh State, was outshot 16-6 in the match, including 8-3 in shots on goal, but junior goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) (5-6-0) made a season-high eight saves to keep the game scoreless and set the stage for Weiner's game-winning goal.

Joseph Romano (2-1-1) made two saves, while surrendering the lone goal of the match in 66:29 of action for Brockport. Romano relieved Tautis Poniskaitis, who started the match for the Golden Eagles.

Brockport held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Plattsburgh State next hosts SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC match at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Field House Complex. Brockport hosts Buffalo State for a SUNYAC match at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.
