PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's soccer downed SUNY Potsdam 3-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play for its third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex.
With the win, Plattsburgh State (6-6-0, 4-1-0 SUNYAC) is tied with Buffalo State for second place in the SUNYAC standings with 12 points. However, Plattsburgh State has played one fewer game than Buffalo State. SUNY Oneonta leads the conference with 15 points.
Plattsburgh State scored the only goal of the first 45:00 of play to take a 1-0 lead over Potsdam (3-10-1, 1-4-0 SUNYAC) into halftime. Freshman forward Devin Lambe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon) scored his fifth goal of the season, tying him with freshman forward Cole Weiner (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown) for the team lead in goals, in the 26th minute. Junior midfielder Cameron Richards (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) played a pass from near midfield down the left side of the field. Junior forward Yusif Okine (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) ran onto the pass outside the left of the 18-yard box. He quickly crossed the ball into the 18-yard box and Lambe, who timed a run towards the net, never stopped as he one-touched the ball with his right foot into the goal. The goal, which turned out to be the game winner, is Lambe's team-high third game-winning tally of the season.
In the second half, Plattsburgh State added two more goals as the Cardinals pulled away for the 3-0 victory over Potsdam. Freshman forward Alex Graci (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) scored his third goal of the season in the 46th minute to make the score 2-0. Richards ran onto a long ball on the left side of the field. He dribbled past a defender into the top-left portion of the 18-yard box and then passed across to Graci, who was near the penalty spot. Graci controlled the ball, took a couple of steps forward and finished into the lower-right portion of the net. Richards tallied his second assist of the match and his team-leading sixth helper of the season on the play.
In the 73rd minute, Okine scored his second goal of the season to make the final score 3-0. On a free kick in the right side of the 18-yard box, senior midfielder Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) passed the free kick to the left to Okine who one-touched a left-footed strike into the upper-left portion of the net. Marchena garnered his fourth assist of the season and his 20th career point on the play.
Plattsburgh State's defense did the rest as the Cardinals limited the Bears to four shots in the match. The Cardinals tallied 12 shots on the afternoon.
Plattsburgh State held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Pougkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) (6-6-0) made three saves as he tallied his third shutout of the season and the eighth of his Cardinal career. Connor Callan (3-10-1) made three stops in net for Potsdam.
Plattsburgh State next hosts SUNY Cortland for a conference match at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Field House Complex. The Cardinals then host Oswego State at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 for Senior Day. Potsdam faces Oswego in a SUNYAC match at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18.
