Men’s Soccer Shuts Out SUNY Cortland 1-0 to Clinch Berth in 2019 SUNYAC Tournament

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State men's soccer defeated SUNY Cortland 1-0 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday at the Field House Complex to extend the Cardinals' winning streak to four matches and clinch a berth in the 2019 SUNYAC Tournament.

Plattsburgh State (7-6-0, 5-1-0 SUNYAC) is now tied with SUNY Oneonta atop the SUNYAC standings with 15 points and both teams have clinched SUNYAC Tournament spots.

Plattsburgh State was outshot by SUNY Cortland (6-5-2, 2-3-1 SUNYAC) 7-0 in the first half, but Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) (1-0-0) made four saves to keep the match scoreless going into halftime.

Plattsburgh State started generating offensive chances in the second half and the Cardinals would score the decisive goal in the 74th minute. Junior defender Luke Rapaport (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) took a corner kick from the right corner that went into the 18-yard box, where senior defender Joe Gula (New Market, Md./Oakdale) headed the ball into a group of players. When the ball reappeared, sophomore midfielder Ankit Patel (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) gained possession in the six-yard box and scored with a high shot over the top of the sliding Cortland goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

Feeley and the Plattsburgh State defense made the 1-0 lead hold as the Cardinals went on to win 1-0. Making his first start of the season, Feeley made six saves, including some stops with a high degree of difficulty, to pick up his ninth career shutout and his first since the 2017 season.

Braden Melveney (2-3-0) made three saves for Cortland.

Plattsburgh State was outshot 16-7, including 6-4 in shots on goal, in the match and each team had four corner kicks.

Plattsburgh State faces Oswego State in a SUNYAC match at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Field House Complex. Saturday's match is Senior Day for the Cardinals and their seniors will be recognized prior to the match. Cortland travels to SUNY Potsdam for a SUNYAC match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
