PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder
Ankit Patel (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored twice to lead Plattsburgh State men's soccer to a 2-0 victory over Oswego State in State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at the Field House Complex.
With the win, Plattsburgh State (8-6-0, 6-1-0 SUNYAC) extended its winning streak to five matches, which is the Cardinals' longest winning streak since 2017.
Patel scored his first goal of the match to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. An Oswego State (9-5-1, 4-2-1 SUNYAC) defender was unable to clear the ball from his own 18-yard box as senior forward
Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional (N.J.)) gained possession for the Cardinals. Robertson made a move to open up a passing lane and fed the ball ahead to Patel at the top of the six-yard box. Patel one-touched the ball into the lower-right portion of the net for what turned out to be the decisive goal.
In the 70th minute, Patel struck again for his third goal of the season. In the Cardinals' defensive end of the field, sophomore forward
Noel Vidal (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) passed the ball to senior midfielder
Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge), who sent a long ball down the field. Patel ran onto the ball and quickly fired a shot from outside the top of the 18-yard box that arced over the head of the Lakers' goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make the score 2-0.
The Lakers had offensive chances in the match as they outshot the Cardinals 17-6 in the match and 12-2 in the second half. However, junior goalkeeper
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) (2-0-0) made nine saves in the match to keep Oswego State off of the scoreboard and earn his second shutout of the season – the 10th of his career.
Brian Terra (8-5-1) made three saves in goal for Oswego State.
