Men’s Soccer Tops SUNY Canton 4-0 for Sixth Consecutive Victory

CANTON, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Cameron Richards (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career to help Plattsburgh State men's soccer extend its winning streak to six games with a 4-0 shut-out victory over SUNY Canton in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at the SUNY Canton Turf Field.

Richardson scored his first two collegiate goals and added an assist for a career-high five points in the match.

Plattsburgh State (9-6-0) controlled play for much of the first half and scored twice to take a 2-0 lead over Canton (6-8-2) into halftime. Senior forward Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional (N.J.)) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the fifth minute of the match. Robertson timed a run to get behind the defense and Richards played a through ball ahead. The goalkeeper came out of the net to challenge for the ball, but Robertson reached it first, dribbled around the goalkeeper and scored into the vacated net for his fourth goal of the season. Richards tallied his team-leading sixth assist of the season on the play.

Freshman forward Devin Lambe (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Beacon) scored the Cardinal's second goal of the match in the 18th minute. The Cardinals forced a turnover near midfield and used a series of quick passes to get the ball ahead to Lambe. Dribbling into the top of the 18-yard box, Lambe slid the ball past the Canton goalkeeper, who had come out to challenge for the ball, for the goal. Lambe leads the team with six goals in 2019.

In the second half, Plattsburgh State maintained control of the match and scored two more goals to cruise to a 4-0 victory.

Richards scored both goals for the Cardinals in the second half with his first goal coming in the 46th minute. Just outside the top of the 18-yard box in Canton's defensive end, Richards intercepted an attempt by a Kangaroo defender to clear the ball, quickly turned and fired a shot that beat the goalkeeper to make the score 3-0.

Then in the 49th minute, Lambe dribbled the ball across midfield and played a pass ahead to Robertson on the right wing. Robertson dribbled into the 18-yard box and fired a shot toward the lower-left corner of the goal. The Kangaroo goalkeeper made a diving stop, but was unable to control the rebound. Richards got to the ball first and promptly finished with a left-footed strike into the lower-left portion of the net. Richards' goals were the first of his Plattsburgh State career.

Making his first career start in goal for Plattsburgh State, senior goalkeeper James McGarrity (Centereach, N.Y./Centereach) (1-0-0) made one save to earn his first career win and shutout.

Tyler Petersen (5-3-0) made seven saves in goal for Canton.

Plattsburgh State outshot Canton 15-6, including 11-1 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 7-1 in favor of the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh State, which is tied with SUNY Oneonta for first place in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standings with 18 points, returns to SUNYAC play at SUNY New Paltz on Friday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. The Cardinals conclude their regular season with a conference match at Oneonta on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
