Gula’s Double-Overtime Game Winner Propels Cardinals to 2-1 Win Over SUNY Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Senior defender Joe Gula (New Market, Md./Oakdale) scored with nine seconds remaining in the second overtime period to cap off a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over SUNY Geneseo in a State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer match on Friday at College Stadium.

With 14 seconds left in the second overtime period, senior defender Luke Rapaport (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland) took a corner kick from the right corner that found Gula near the penalty spot. Gula corralled the ball and quickly fired a right-footed strike into the upper-right corner for his first career game-winning goal in the 110th minute.

The Cardinals (4-6-0, 2-1-0 SUNYAC) forced overtime after Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional (NJ)) headed in a game-tying goal with 18 seconds left in regulation. Sophomore defender Andrew Braverman (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) sent a long ball into left side of the 18-yard box. The Geneseo (4-6-0, 0-3-0 SUNYAC) goalkeeper was unable to control the ball and freshman forward Cole Weiner (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) got possession, turned and fired the ball toward the net that Robertson headed in to tie the match at 1-1 in the 90th minute. The goal is Robertson's third of the season.

Geneseo scored in the 45th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Adam Astarita got knocked over between a couple of defenders, but he got back up and passed the ball to James Perrone. Perrone moved with the ball toward the left post and scored from close range with 36 second left before halftime.

Plattsburgh State's junior goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) (4-6-0) and Geneseo's Will Price (4-6-0) each made five saves in the match.

Plattsburgh State outshot Geneseo 19-12, including 8-0 in the two overtime periods.

The Cardinals held an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.
