PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey defeated Skidmore College 6-4 in an exhibition game on Saturday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State and Skidmore traded goals in the first period as the score was 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Freshman forward
Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./ Buffalo Jr. Sabres) got Plattsburgh State on the scoreboard at 5:53 of the first period, with freshman defenseman
Christian Dahl (St. Peters, Mo./Topeka Pilots) and freshman forward
Christian Thomas (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Topeka Pilota) assisting on the play. On the power play, Dahl fired a hard pass from near the left face-off dot across to Tretowicz, who was on the far side of the net near the goal line. Tretowicz controlled the pass and jammed it inside the right post before the Skidmore goaltender could get across.
However, Skidmore fought back to tie the game at 1-1 when Matt Muzyka scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 15:39 of the first period. Austin Rook one-timed a shot from the slot that changed direction off a diving Cardinal. The Plattsburgh State goaltender could not react to the change of direction quick enough as the puck deflected to Muzyka by the right side of the net and he scored. Nicolas Stuckless picked up the secondary assists.
In the second period, Plattsburgh State outscored Skidmore 3-2 to take a 4-3 lead into the second intermission.
Dahl scored for the Cardinals on the power play at 3:09 of the second period to put Plattsburgh State in front 2-1. Junior forward
Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) won a face-off to the right of the Skidmore goal. The puck went to Freshman forward freshman forward
Samir Abouelhana (Lake Saint Louis, Mo./Philadelphia Revolution) on the near boards. Abouelhana played the puck back to Dahl who skated to his left along the blue line and blasted a slap shot for the goal.
The Cardinals extended their lead to 3-1 on a goal by freshman forward
Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) at 5:11 of the second period. After Plattsburgh State won a battle along the boards by the left circle in the offensive zone, they used a couple of passes to get the puck into the low slot where Hale finished for the goal. Senior forward
Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) and freshman forward
Hunter Alden (Walla Walla, Wash./Northeast Generals) assisted on the goal.
Rook would score for Skidmore at 7:04 of the second period to cut the Cardinals' lead to 3-2. On the power-play, Rook took a pass in the high slot and fired a high wrist shot that beat the goaltender. Cole Beckstead and Mike Gelatt assisted on the play.
Freshman forward
Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ontario/Blind River Beavers) would answer for Plattsburgh State with a power-play goal at 9:50 of the second period to push the Cardinal lead to 4-2. Puck movement on the power play led to a one-timer by Young from the slot that went into the upper part of the goal. Thomas and freshman defenseman
Jake Sutton (Pompano Beach, Fla./Northern Cyclones) assisted on the goal.
Skidmore answered when Avery Steele, in the high slot near the blue line, one-timed a pass from Rook that found its way through a screened Plattsburgh State goaltender to make the score 4-3 on the power play at 12:34 of the second period. Will Steele tallied the secondary assist.
In the third period, Skidmore scored the first goal to tie the game at 4-4, before Plattsburgh State garnered the final two goals to make the final score 6-4 in favor of Plattsburgh State.
Skidmore's Reid Russell unleashed a slap shot from the point that found its way through the Plattsburgh State goaltender for a power-play goal to make the score 4-4 at 12:51 of the third period. Stuckless and Brandon Borges assisted on the goal.
Thomas answered for Plattsburgh State with the game-winning goal, scored on a 5-on-3 power play at 12:51 of the third period. The Cardinals won a battle for the puck in the left corner in their offensive zone. Sophomore forward
Christian DiFelice (Thorold, Ontario/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) skated along the side boards, turned and fired a pass to the front of the net that found Thomas, who was unmarked by the defense. Thomas redirected the pass with a shot through the goaltender's five hole for the game-winning goal.
Alden scored the final goal of the night, an empty-net goal from the neutral zone to put Plattsburgh State up 6-4 at 18:59 of the third period. Freshman forward
Andrew Bechard (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Vermont Lumberjacks) chipped the puck ahead to Alden who turned and fired the shot into the empty net.
Freshman goaltender
Lawson Fenton (Medina, N.Y./Coquitlam Express) started in goal and made two saves in one period of play. Sophomore
Brandon Wells (Spirit River, Alberta/Melville Millionaires) played the second period and made four saves, while allowing two goals. Junior
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers), the goalie of record, made nine saves and allowed one goal.
Brandon Kasel made 30 saves in goal for Skidmore.
Plattsburgh State went 4-of-12 on the power play and Skidmore finished 3-of-12 with the man advantage.
Shots on goal were 36-19 in favor of Plattsburgh State.
Plattsburgh State begins State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play against The College at Brockport at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena. Skidmore plays at SUNY Cortland at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
