Women's Volleyball Topped by Fredonia, 3-0, in SUNYAC, Home Finale

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team fell to Fredonia, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-15), in its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) and home finale on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
 
The Blue Devils outgained the Cardinals in service aces (8-2), blocks (6-3) and digs (44-32) while hitting .391 as a team. Despite hitting in the negative during the first set, Plattsburgh State wound up fashioning a positive figure for the match on .070 hitting in the second and .080 hitting in the third.
 
Plattsburgh State falls to 8-17 overall (1-8 SUNYAC) with the loss and wraps up its season next weekend at the Skidmore Quad, beginning with a match against host Skidmore College on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. Fredonia rises to 9-16 overall (2-7 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts Medaille College on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m.
 
Fredonia never trailed in the first set, hitting .500 on 17 kills and three errors in 28 total attempts while limiting Plattsburgh State to just three kills in the opening frame. The Blue Devils capped off the set on a 6-1 run, with a kill by junior outside hitter Emma Booth handing the visitors a 25-12 victory in the first.
 
Junior middle blocker Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) scored the first point of the second on a kill, but Fredonia went on a 3-0 surge to take a lead it would never relinquish. Fredonia wound up winning the second, 25-14.
 
The Cardinals controlled the pace early in the third set, seizing a 4-2 lead following three straight points on a pair of block assists by Simmons and sophomore middle blocker Tara McGovern (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and a Fredonia ball-handling error. The Blue Devils went on a five-point tear to go up, 8-5, and an eight-point Fredonia run midway through the frame staked Fredonia to an 18-7 cushion. With match point on the line down 24-10, Plattsburgh State showed mettle, receiving a kill from sophomore outside hitter/opposite Kaitlyn Bjelko (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown), a point on a Fredonia attack error, a pair of Simmons aces and a solo block by sophomore middle blocker Alicia Fisher (Brooklyn, N.Y./Science Skills). Junior outside hitter/libero Makenna Kallin floored a kill on the ensuing rally to hand Fredonia the third, 25-15.
 
Simmons registered five kills and hit .500 for the match while serving up two aces and posting two block assists. Junior setter Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) dished out 16 assists and defended seven digs, while senior outside hitter Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) also finished with seven digs.
 
For Fredonia, Booth hit .524 on 11 kills and no errors in 21 total attempts, while junior middle blocker Emma Falk hit .667 (6-0-9) and had five block assists. Freshman setter/outside hitter Kourtney Krchniak distributed 30 assists, while freshman libero Sierra Keim recorded 18 digs.
