In the first period of play, Plattsburgh State scored three times to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Sophomore defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) got the scoring started with a power-play goal at 3:41 of the first period. St. Michael's attempted to clear their defensive zone, but senior defenseman Andrew Pizzo (Thorold, Ontario/Niagra University) held the puck in at the right point and played a pass over to Araujo at the left point. Araujo skated into the top of the left circle and fired a wrist shot that found its way through the Saint Michael's goaltender to make the score 1-0. Freshman forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./Johnstown Tomahawks) was credited with the secondary assist.

Plattsburgh State doubled its lead to 2-0 with an even-strength goal at 15:14 of the first period. Plattsburgh State briefly lost an offensive zone face-off, but freshman forward Brendan Young (Lefroy, Ontario/Blind River Beavers) forced a turnover. Young passed the puck to freshman forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres), who was by the goal line to the left of the net. Tretowicz then played a pass to freshman forward Christian Thomas (Bloomingdale, N.Y./Topeka Pilots) in the slot and Thomas quickly fired a wrist shot that beat the goaltender high on the glove side.

The Cardinals scored their final goal of the first period on the power play at the 16:25 mark. Playing at the left point, junior Tom Bowe (Homer, Alaska/Aspen Leafs) played a pass to senior forward Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagra University) as he skated across the slot. Kuhn turned towards the goal near the right face-off dot and took a wrist shot that was saved, but the puck bounced across the front of the net to sophomore forward Christian DiFelice (Thorold, Ontario/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) who banged home the rebound to make the score 3-0.

In the second period, each team would score once to make the score 4-1 in favor of Plattsburgh State at the end of 40:00 of play.

On a 5-on-3 power play, Araujo passed the puck from the right point across to freshman defenseman Ryan Hogg (Duncan, British Columbia/Islanders Hockey Club) who one-timed a shot from the top of the left circle that beat a moving St. Michael's goaltender to put Plattsburgh State up 4-0 at 1:13 of the second period. Along with Araujo, freshman forward Brendan Schulte (Fullerton, Calif./Northern Cyclones) assisted on the play.

Under two minutes later, Saint Michael's got on the scoreboard with a goal at the 3:03 mark. With an extra attacker on the ice during a delayed penalty, Sel Narby walked the puck from the left point to the right side of the slot and snapped a wrist shot that went in high on the blocker side to make the score 4-1. Niall Foster and Paul Cerdà assisted on the goal.

In the third period, St. Michael's scored the first two goals of the period to cut the Plattsburgh State lead to 4-3, but the Cardinals scored the last goal to make the final score 5-3.
