Women’s Soccer Defeats SUNY Potsdam 2-1 on Saturday

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's soccer defeated SUNY Potsdam 2-1 in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) road match on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Plattsburgh State (6-5-1, 2-2-1 SUNYAC) is in sixth place in the SUNYAC standings with seven points. SUNY Potsdam (5-8-0, 1-4-0 SUNYAC) is in ninth place with three points.

All three goals in the match were scored in the first half. Plattsburgh State tallied the first two goals of the match to take a 2-0 lead over Potsdam. Senior forward Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) got the scoring started with a goal in the 19th minute. Junior midfielder Abigail Seamans (Bolton Landing, N.Y./Bolton Central) played the ball ahead into the 18-yard box. The Potsdam goalkeeper tried to beat Matott to the ball, but Matott won possession, dribbled to her right and struck a right-footed shot into the vacated net for her fourth goal of the season.

About five minutes after Matott's goal, sophomore forward Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) scored her second goal of the season in the 24th minute. Seamans took a corner kick from the right corner that found Seidman near the far post and she headed the ball in to make the score 2-0. Seidman's goal was also her first game-winning goal of the season.

Potsdam fought back and scored what turned out to be the final goal of the match in the 31st minute. Meaghan Sardi took a pass from Lexi Dean and dribbled into the top-right portion of the 18-yard box. Sardi fired a shot that bounced in off of the crossbar for the goal. Maeve Morrissey was credited with the secondary assist on the play.

Neither team would score again and Plattsburgh State held on for the 2-1 victory. The Cardinal defense limited the Bears to 10 shots in the match, including five in the second half. Plattsburgh State had 22 shots in the match, including nine shots on goal.
