PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Despite leading at halftime the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell to the No. 16/17 Geneseo Knights 74-65 Saturday evening inside Memorial Hall.
Plattsburgh State is now 8-10 overall and 5-6 in the SUNYAC while Geneseo moves to 16-1 overall and 9-1 in the conference.
The Cardinals shot 43.6% in field goals and were 42.9% from behind the arc.
Junior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) led the Cardinals with 26 points, freshmen guard
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y. / Tamarac) had 14 points and six assists, senior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) had 11 points and freshman forward
Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington) had nine points.
The Knights started the game with a seven-point run but a jumper from Doody and a three-pointer from Durnin cut the lead to two points.
Geneseo made a three-pointer and Doody drained a three followed by a layup from Durnin to tie it 10-10.
A three-pointer from DePasquale gave Plattsburgh State a 13-10 advantage.
The Knights made a layup with 1:05 left in the quarter and Durnin put in a jumper to give the Cardinals a 20-17 lead heading into the second quarter.
Degnan drained a three to start the second quarter followed by a three from Durnin for a nine-point cushion.
Plattsburgh State had an 11-point edge with 6:09 left after a jumper from Degnan.
Geneseo ended the quarter with three free throws and a layup to head into halftime down 38-32.
The Knights cut the lead to two-points two minutes into the third quarter and tied the game 42-42 with 5:33 remaining.
A free throw gave Geneseo a one-point edge but a three-pointer from Doody gave the Cardinals a two-point advantage.
Geneseo went on a seven-point spree to lead 50-45 with 1:32 left.
Plattsburgh State ended the quarter with layups from Walker and Degnan to head into the final quarter only down by one, 50-49.
The Knights started the fourth quarter with a nine-point run for a ten-point cushion and took their largest lead of 13-points with 6:03 remaining.
Plattsburgh State went on a ten-point run to come within three-points of the lead.
DePasquale drained two three-pointers, junior forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) made two free throws and Durnin had a layup.
Geneseo scored six points for a nine-point advantage and two free throws from Durnin and one from Clare cut it to six.
The Knights finished the game with a layup and a free throw for the comeback and the nine-point win.
Plattsburgh State is away Tuesday, Jan. 29 to continue SUNYAC play against Potsdam with a 5:30 p.m. start.
