CORTLAND, N.Y. – The No. 15 Plattsburgh State men's basketball team (12-4, 6-3 SUNYAC) fell to Cortland (12-4, 6-3 SUNYAC) 65-53 on Saturday evening inside Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium.
Senior forward
Jonathan Patron(Huntington, N.Y. / Harborfields) led the team with 29 points and 14 rebounds while senior guard
Brandon Johnson (Greenburgh, N.Y./Woodlands) recorded 16 points and senior guard/forward
Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) scored 11 points.
Cortland had a 6-0 lead to start and the Cardinals quickly tied it with two layups from Patron and a layup from Johnson.
The half was tied four more times before Plattsburgh State took and kept the lead for the remainder of the half.
Plattsburgh State ended the half with a jumper from Johnson and two free throws from Patron for a 42-32 lead heading into the second half.
Middleton started the second half with a dunk for a 12-point advantage for the Cardinals.
After a layup from the Red Dragons, Patron had a layup and Johnson had a jumper for the Cardinals largest lead of 14-points.
The Red Dragons went on an eight-point run to cut the lead to six.
Patron put in two free throws and Cortland drained a three three-pointer for a one-point edge.
Patron had an old-fashioned three for a two-point advantage but Cortland made two free throws to tie the game 53-53 with 10:52 remaining.
Patron made a free throw, Middleton had a layup, Patron had a layup and Johnson put in a layup for a seven-point cushion with 5:47 left.
Cortland was able to cut the lead to one point with 1:07 remaining and made the game winning basket with 20 seconds left.
Plattsburgh State out-rebounded Cortland 44-34 but the Red Dragons were able to score 17 points off the Cardinals 15 turn overs.
Plattsburgh State is home Friday, Jan. 25 to host The College at Brockport at 7:30 p.m.
