Men's Soccer Battles St. Lawrence to Double-Overtime, 0-0 Tie at Mayor's Cup Tournament

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) stood on his head with eight saves, including a crucial stop in the final minute of regulation, to help the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team tie North Country rival St. Lawrence University, 0-0, following regulation and two overtime periods on Saturday afternoon at the Mayor's Cup Tournament hosted by SUNY Oneonta at Red Dragon Field.

With 20 seconds to go in the second half, St. Lawrence had a corner kick opportunity, giving the Saints one last chance at ending the game in regulation. The ball was played in from the left corner, and after deflecting off a player in the box, junior defender Aidan Callahan squared up a right-footed shot from the right side of the 18-yard box. Wilson punched the high-arcing shot that was marked for the back of the net over the crossbar, giving the Saints one last chance at a corner. St. Lawrence was unable to generate any offensive threats in the waning seconds, as the Cardinals forced overtime.

Wilson saved Plattsburgh State once again in the 99th minute, as the Saints nearly produced the golden goal. A St. Lawrence player sent a dangerous ball in from the left wing to the top of the 6-yard box, springing Wilson into a dive. The ball found the foot of senior defender Brendan McNamee, but Wilson inched further to his left from his sprawled diving position to make the save.

Plattsburgh State moves to 1-3-1 overall with the result and next visits Skidmore College on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. St. Lawrence moves to 3-0-1 overall with the result and next hosts SUNY Cortland on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m.

The Cardinals nearly scored in the 70th minute. Senior forward Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) received a pass on the left edge of the 6-yard box, and the St. Lawrence goalkeeper dove out to grab the ball. Robertson ended up being able to center a pass to junior forward Sean Cray (Modena, N.Y./Wallkill), whose attempt at the top of the 6-yard box was denied by a Saint defender.

Both teams finished with 14 shots, while the Cardinals held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.

Wilson registered eight saves to post his second shutout of the season, while sophomore goalkeeper Ben Kelty turned aside seven shots for St. Lawrence.

Wilson and Robertson each were named to the Mayor's Cup All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the event.
