HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the Ducks Classic hosted by the Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday at Canavan Arena, falling, 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-12), to Kean University before dropping a 3-0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-12) decision to No. 22 Swarthmore College.
Plattsburgh State drops to 3-3 overall with the losses and wraps up action at the Ducks Classic tomorrow when it faces host Stevens (11 a.m.) and the College of Mount Saint Vincent (1 p.m.). Kean and Swarthmore move to 4-1 and 6-0 overall, respectively, with the wins.
Kean 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-12)
Plattsburgh State came out hot against Kean, hitting .286 in the first set, but the Cougars held the Cardinal offense in check the rest of the match to pull out the straight-set victory.
Kean hit .305 for the match and finished with a 15-2 edge in service aces, a 2-0 margin in blocks and a 36-35 cushion in digs.
Sophomore middle blocker
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) led the Cardinals with a .571 hitting percentage, flooring eight kills in 14 total attempts with no errors. Sophomore defensive specialist
Maddy Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) defended 11 digs, while freshman setter/opposite
Lauren DeVoe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) handed out six assists.
For Kean, senior right side Andrea Antal paced a balanced attack with eight kills, while sophomore setters Britni Jaskot and Michelle Froehlich dished out 16 and 13 assists, respectively. Junior middle hitter Jesse Larkin served up seven aces, while senior outside hitter Vikki Stec tallied nine digs.
No. 22 Swarthmore 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-8, 25-14, 25-12)
Swarthmore lived up to its national ranking, as the 2017 NCAA Division III Tournament quarterfinalist hit .400 for the match while holding the edge in service aces (7-1), blocks (8-3) and digs (45-30).
Junior middle blocker/opposite
Tatyana Barlow (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) keyed the Plattsburgh State offense with a team-high four kills, while sophomore setter/defensive specialist
Allyssa Rock (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) distributed six assists. Simmons reinforced the front row defensively with three total blocks (one solo, two assist), while sophomore defensive specialist
Abby Bone (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) defended eight digs.
For Swarthmore, junior middle blocker Emma Morgan-Bennett hit a scorching .818 on nine kills in 11 total attempts, while junior outside hitter Mehra den Braven floored 17 kills and hit .438. Sophomore setter Alyssa Nathan doled out 33 assists, while senior libero Sarah Girard led three Garnet players in double-digit dig figures with 12.
