Men's Soccer Downed by UMass Boston, 2-0

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Playing a man down due to a second-half red card, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team conceded two goals in the final 10 minutes of play in a 2-0 loss to UMass Boston to open up the Mayor's Cup Tournament on Friday afternoon at SUNY Oneonta's Red Dragon Field.

Despite being down a man for nearly 30 minutes, the Cardinals finished with a 12-10 edge in shots and took three corner kicks to UMass Boston's two.

Plattsburgh State drops to 1-3-0 overall with the loss and faces North Country rival St. Lawrence University tomorrow at 1 p.m. as a part of Mayor's Cup Tournament action. UMass Boston rises to 1-3-0 overall with the win and next takes on host Oneonta tomorrow at 4 p.m.

The Beacons got on the board in the 81st minute, as freshman forward Julio DaSilva found the back of the net. Freshman defender/midfielder Gerardo Castaneda took a shot that was blocked before DaSilva collected the loose ball at the top of the 6-yard box and hammered it home.

UMass Boston added insurance 1:16 later on an unassisted goal from Castaneda. Castaneda received a long ball in the midfield and dribbled down the left wing before scoring on a tight angle along the endline.

The Cardinals had several chances down the stretch, as senior forward Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) put two shots on goal in the 84th minute before junior midfielder Connor Nembach (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) put a shot on target three minutes later.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) turned aside two shots in the loss for the Cardinals, while junior goalkeeper Omar Castro-Dreher made seven saves in the shutout victory for the Beacons.
