ALBANY, N.Y. – After winning several games at Plattsburgh State as a men's soccer student-athlete and later as an assistant coach,
Chris Taylor earned his first victory as the Cardinals' head coach Tuesday night at ACP Field, as Plattsburgh State blanked The Sage Colleges, 1-0, in non-conference action.
It marked the 28th career win as a head coach for Taylor, which includes his four years leading the men's soccer program at Clarkson University.
Plattsburgh State rises to 1-2-0 overall with the win and next faces UMass Boston as a part of the Mayor's Cup Tournament at SUNY Oneonta on Friday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. Sage drops to 0-2-0 overall with the loss and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m.
Senior forward
Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) recorded what ended up being the lone goal of the contest, finding the back of the net in the 13th minute. Junior forward
Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) crossed the ball from the center from around 20 yards out, and Robertson found the back right corner of the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ryan Wilson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) preserved the lead with a diving save with 4:33 left in regulation, and he came up with another stop on a direct kick nearly two minutes later.
Plattsburgh State finished with a 17-11 edge in shots and an 8-5 margin in corner kicks.
Wilson made eight saves in the shutout victory for the Cardinals, while his counterpart, senior goalkeeper Mike Chiaravalloti, turned aside six shots in the loss for the Gators. It marked the first shutout for Wilson in a Plattsburgh State uniform, as he posted nine clean sheets in 2016 while playing for Oneonta.
