Late Goal Stuns Women's Soccer in 2-1 Loss to Brockport in SUNYAC Opener

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Despite tying the game at 1-1 in the 85th minute, the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team ultimately fell, 2-1, to The College at Brockport in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opener for both teams Friday afternoon at Bob Boozer Field due to a Golden Eagle game-winner just 1:15 after the Cardinals' equalizer.

Just one game removed from scoring her first collegiate goal, which served as the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over Skidmore College on Saturday, Sept. 15, senior defender Jessica Mangieri (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) came up with another crucial marker, as she scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute to level the score at 1-all.

Brockport countered with the eventual game-winner 1:15 later, as senior defender Lindsey Lovett sent a cross to senior midfielder Maddie Siclair, who finished top shelf to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead with just 4:17 left in regulation. While the Cardinals earned a corner kick in the waning moments of the game, they were unable to net the equalizer.

Plattsburgh State drops to 5-2-0 overall (0-1-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits defending SUNYAC champion SUNY Geneseo tomorrow for a 1 p.m. matchup of last year's conference championship game. Brockport rises to 4-3-0 overall (1-0-0 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 1 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, freshman defender Bri Kovarik put Brockport on the board in the 59th minute. Freshman defender Kayla Bailey beat out a Cardinal defender and crossed the ball to Kovarik, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net.

Brockport finished with a 14-12 edge in shots and a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.

Graduate student goalkeeper Taylor Adams (Schenectady, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) made five saves in the setback for Plattsburgh State, while junior goalkeeper Kimberly Lubanski turned aside six shots in the win for Brockport.
