Baseball Rallies In Eighth Inning To Beat UW Stout 10-7 In Final Day At Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State baseball team rallied in the eighth inning against University of Wisconsin-Stout to take a 10-7 win on their last day of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Saturday.

"What a great way to cap the trip," head coach Kris Doorey said. "That's the biggest difference between this club that last couple of years.  They could have just thrown in the towel, but instead they kept fighting. It says a lot about the makeup of the team."

Sophomore Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) was 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI's while sophomore Mike Onufrak (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and sophomore Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan / Joto) recorded five RBI's.

UW Stout scored one run in the bottom of the first and Onufrak tied it in the third off a single from Mori.

UW Stout recorded four more runs in the bottom of the third off a single, a hit by pitch, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly.

Mori doubled in the fifth to plate sophomore Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) and senior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) and Mori scored off a single from S. Bryant to come within one run.

UW Stout scored one more in the sixth off a sacrifice fly and another in the seventh off a double to take a three-run lead.

Onufrak started the rally with a two-run single to plate junior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry) and junior Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches).

Junior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) and sophomore Keller Kowalowski (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) scored off an error by the short stop and Follmer scored off a single from S. Bryant.

Mori scored the Cardinals tenth run off a sacrifice from Cipriano.

Plattsburgh States defense held off UW Stout in the eighth and ninth innings to complete the comeback and take the three-run victory.

"We got a lot of production throughout the lineup today," Doorey said. "Ken, Stephen and Noah have been hitting the ball all week. But, it's nice to see guys like Alex and Mike contribute today.  We are going to need those guys for us to be successful."

Junior Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) pitched 5 innings and scattered five hits, five runs, walked four and struck out three.

Freshman Chase Blazak (Pelham, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) pitched 1 inning and gave up two hits, one run, walked two and struck out one.

Sophomore Connor Lyons (Brookhaven, N.Y. / Bellport) got the win after pitching 2 innings and gave up one hit, one run, walked two and struck out two.

Junior Frank Finkbeiner (Stone Ridge, N.Y. / Rondout Valley) received the save after pitching 1 inning and retiring the lineup.

"We just played a third of our entire season in one week.  Guys are tired and dragging a little, so it was nice for them to grab a win before we head back north."

The Cardinals are back in action Friday, March 23 to continue SUNYAC play at Cortland at 3 p.m.
