Plattsburgh State Baseball Drops Two To Oneonta

FORT MYERS, Fla – The Plattsburgh State baseball team is now 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC after dropping two games to SUNY Oneona (6-4, 2-0) on Sunday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

"It's tough to play three conference games your second and third days on a baseball field," head coach Kris Doorey stated.  "I am proud of the way we competed and with a little more work we will be right where we need to be."

GAME ONE: PLATTSBURGH 4, ONEONTA 7

The game was suspended on Saturday four batters into the first inning with Oneonta leading 1-0, scoring off a pass ball.

"We lost any momentum we had yesterday early today," Doorey said.

Oneonta scored in the third with a double to right center and scored two in the fifth off a two singles.

Plattsburgh State scored two in the fifth.

Junior John Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) was walked, advanced to second when sophomore Mike Onufrak (Mattituck, N.Y. / Mattituck) was walked, moved to third off a ground out and scored  on a pass ball.

Onufrak scored off a sacrifice fly from sophomore Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches).

The Red Dragons scored two more runs in the sixth off a triple and one in the seventh off a ground out.

The Cardinals tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman Joe Battista (Moreau, N.Y. / South Glens Falls) hit a single to left field plating Craft and senior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East).

Oneonta was able to get two more outs before Plattsburgh could score another run to take the win and split the series.

Junior pitcher Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) pitched 5.2 innings and scattered eight hits, six runs, walked two and struck out seven.

Freshman Matthew Triola (Saratoga Springs, N.Y. / Saratoga Springs) pitched 1.1 innings and gave up 2 hits and one run.

"Pat threw the ball well, but left a couple of pitches in the zone and Oneonta took advantage."

GAME TWO: PLATTSBURGH 3, ONEONTA 4

Oneonta scored in the second off a single to right field and held a 1-0 lead for four innings.

Plattsburgh State tied the game in the sixth when sophomore Kentaro Mori (Tokyo, Japan / Joto) hit a double to right center to score S. Bryant.

The game remained tied and went into extra innings. The Red Dragons scored two runs in the tenth with a single to right field and the Cardinals tied it again when S. Bryant hit a double to right field and scored Deland and sophomore Alex Follmer (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh).

Oneonta scored their fourth run in the 12th inning off a wild pitch and Plattsburgh State was unable to answer and took the one run loss.

Junior Ryan Whalen (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Plattsburgh) pitched 6 innings and gave up four hits, one run, walked one and struck out three.

Sophomore Connor Lyons (Brookhaven, N.Y. / Bellport) pitched 3.2 innings, scattered one run two hits, walked two and struck out two.

Sophomore Justin Adams (Valhalla, N.Y. / Westlake) pitched 2 innings and gave up two hits, one run walked two and struck out two.

Senior Jacob Stein (Bay Shore, N.Y./ Bay Shore) pitched .1 innings.

"We had a lot of opportunities to win the game.  I am proud of the way the guys battled," Doorey said. 'Whalen did a great job of shutting the offense down after they built so much confidence in game one. Lyons did a great job out of the bullpen."

Plattsburgh State is back in action Tuesday, March 13 to play Wisconsin Lutheran College at 9 a.m. and Haverford College at 12 p.m.
