Men's Ice Hockey Rallies for 4-3 Win Over Cortland

College Hockey Stats Box Score

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team overcame a 3-2 deficit by netting two goals in a span of 1:54 early in the third period, defeating SUNY Cortland, 4-3, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Friday evening at Alumni Arena.

Junior forward Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) tied the game at 3-all 4:46 into the third with his first goal of the season. Freshman forward Ian Wallgren (Stockholm, Sweden/Connecticut Oilers) chipped a puck down into the right corner, and freshman forward Daniil Ovchinnikov (Saint Petersburg, Russia/Boston Jr. Rangers) eventually gained possession along the right boards. Ovchinnikov took a shot that was saved before Drabin scored on the rebound low glove side. It marked the first collegiate point for Wallgren.

At 6:40 of the third period, junior forward Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, Quebec/Cégep de Saint-Laurent) netted what ended up being the game-winner. Senior forward Jesse Neher (Calgary, Alberta/Cowichen Valley Capitals) forced a turnover in the Cortland zone and gained control of the puck in the slot. Neher then took a shot that hit Desnoyers before Desnoyers took a backhand swing at the rebound to beat the Red Dragon goaltender for his first goal of the season.

After sustaining a tripping penalty with 1:48 left in regulation, the Red Dragons elected to pull their goalie with exactly one minute to go to skate 5-on-5 with an empty net. Cortland was assessed another penalty eight seconds later and was unable to net the equalizer, as the Cardinals emerged victorious.

Plattsburgh State rises to 5-4-1 overall (5-2-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits archrival and No. 8/9 Oswego State tomorrow at 7 p.m. Cortland slips to 4-7-0 (2-6-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals opened scoring 9:11 into the first period, as Drabin took a shot on the backhand that got caught up in traffic in front of the net before senior forward Ross Sloan (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) knocked it past the goal line. Cortland responded 17 seconds later, as freshman forward Dorian Overland forced a turnover along the end boards, and junior forward Nico Gonzalez scored on a one-time shot from the slot.

Sophomore forward Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) handed Plattsburgh State a 2-1 advantage at 12:47 of the first period. Lawson wrapped the puck around the end boards up to freshman defenseman Matt Araujo (Brookhaven, N.Y./Boston Jr. Rangers) at the left edge of the left face-off circle, and Araujo ripped a pass to Lawson at the right post. Lawson then one-timed a shot low glove side to give the Cardinals the lead. Neher also earned an assist on the play.

Cortland tied the game at 7:27 of the second period. Gonzalez helped lead an odd-man rush into the Cardinal zone and took a shot that was blocked before Overland backhanded in the rebound. Freshman forward Ethan Homitz was credited with the secondary assist on the play. The Red Dragons then seized a 3-2 lead with 11:15 gone in the second, as Gonzalez scored his second goal of the game. Overland played the puck forward to Homitz, and Homitz dropped a pass back to Gonzalez, who scored on a wrist shot from the slot.

Drabin keyed the Cardinal offense with a goal and an assist, while Neher distributed two assists.

Plattsburgh State finished with a 32-22 edge in shots on goal but was 0-for-5 on the power play. Cortland was scoreless on one chance with the extra skater.

Sophomore goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made 19 saves in the win for the Cardinals, while junior goaltender Nick Modica turned aside 28 shots in the loss for the Red Dragons.
