MIAMI, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team lost to Wesleyan University 71-39 on Thursday at the Exclusive Invitational in Miami, Fla.
Plattsburgh State falls to 3-8 overall while Wesleyan moves to 5-3.
Junior guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) led the team with nine points and picked up four rebounds.
Freshman forward
Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington) recorded seven points, five rebounds and two steals.
Senior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) scored six points, picked up six rebounds, had four steals and two assists.
Freshmen forward
Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y. / Tamarac) also had six points and had five steals.
Wesleyan out-shot Plattsburgh State 48.1% to 26.9% in field goals and 73.7% to 46.7% in free throws and recorded 48 rebounds compared to the Cardinals 31.
Wesleyan made the first basket but a three-pointer from DePasquale and a layup by Durnin gave Plattsburgh State a three-point lead.
Wesleyan ended the first quarter with a layup and two free throws to head into the second up 10-9.
Wesleyan started the second with a free throw and three pointer for a 14-9 edge.
Two free throws from Durnin, one free throw from freshmen forward
Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y. / Roosevelt) and a jumper by Degnan tied the game 14-14 with 4:53 left in the second quarter.
Wesleyan went on a seven-point run for a 21-14 cushion.
Degnan made a free throw but Wesleyan put in a layup to head into halftime up 23-15.
Wesleyan out-scored Plattsburgh State 31-13 in the third and 17-11 in the final quarter to take the 32 point win.
Plattsburgh State is back home Tuesday, Jan. 8, for a conference game against Potsdam at 5:30 p.m.
