Women’s Basketball Outpaced By New Paltz 69-50

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the SUNYAC after being out-paced by New Paltz (3-2, 1-0) 69-50 Friday night inside Memorial Hall gym.

Freshmen forwards Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y. / Roosevelt) and Kelly Degnan (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington) came off the bench to lead the Cardinals with 11 points each. Walker picked up nine rebounds, five assists and three steals as well.

Senior guard/forward Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) and junior guard/forward Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) each had eight rebounds, three assists and on steal.

DePasquale drained a three-pointer to start the game followed by a jumper by junior guard Christina Testa (Oyster Bay, N.Y. / Oyster Bay) for a 5-0 edge.

The Cardinals kept their lead until 4:40 remaining in the first quarter when a Hawks three-pointer took it away.

A layup at the end of the first quarter gave New Paltz an 11-7 advantage heading into the second.

The Cardinals went on a seven-point run starting with Degnan with a layup followed by Walker with a layup and Degnan had an old-fashioned three-pointer to take a two-point edge at the 6:08 mark.

New Paltz tied the game 18-18 and made three free throws for the lead.

The Hawks out-scored the Cardinals 8-3 in the remaining minutes to head into halftime up 29-21.

 New Paltz had their highest scoring quarter in the third with 21 points compared to Plattsburgh State's 13.

The Hawks took their largest lead of 23 points with 4:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Junior guard Brooke Benna (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) drained a three with 17 seconds left to help cut the Hawks lead to 19.

Plattsburgh State out-rebounded New Paltz 41-34 but recorded 25 turnovers that the Hawks were able to score 11 points off.

The Cardinals are back home Saturday to host Oneonta at 2 p.m.
