PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Behind yet another strong performance in net by sophomore goaltender
Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers), the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team salvaged a 1-1 overtime tie with The College at Brockport in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday evening at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Poreda made 28 saves in the contest against just one goal allowed, which moved him into the NCAA Division III lead in save percentage (.967) for the season. He also ranks second in Division III in goals-against average (0.98) and is just one spot higher on the list than his counterpart on Saturday, Brockport's senior goaltender Jake Moore. Moore stood tall in net with a 43-save performance to help the Golden Eagles battle to a tie.
Plattsburgh State moves to 3-0-1 overall (3-0-1 SUNYAC) with the result and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. Brockport moves to 4-1-1 overall (2-1-1 SUNYAC) with the result and next hosts Hamilton College on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m.
After a scoreless first period, Brockport netted the first goal of the game with 8:06 gone in the second on the power play. Sophomore defenseman Casey Winn passed to sophomore forward Hunter Laslo, who took a shot from the high slot that was saved by Poreda. Sophomore forward Doc Gentzler then fired the rebound into the back of the net from the bottom of the left face-off circle.
Senior forward
Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) tied the game with 13:15 elapsed in the second period. Kuhn emerged out of a scrum in the Cardinal zone with the puck, and he drove into the offensive zone himself before skating around the back of the goal from left to right. He then wrapped the puck inside the right post to net his first goal as a Cardinal after scoring once during his time at NCAA Division I Niagara. Senior defenseman
Jakob Engvall (Jönköping, Sweden/Ogden Mustangs) was credited with the assist on the play.
A mostly uneventful third period, which saw Plattsburgh State outshoot Brockport, 14-7, in the stanza, gave way to a five-minute overtime period, which saw several close plays that nearly ended the game.
The Golden Eagles' best chance of the overtime stanza came 1:24 into the period. Laslo took a shot that Poreda saved with his body, but the rebound trickled to freshman forward Jake Colosanti, whose shot attempt was turned aside by a Poreda pad save. Poreda covered up the puck to prevent any further danger on that sequence.
Plattsburgh State nearly netted the game-winner with just under one minute to play in the overtime period. Engvall launched a stretch pass through the air that sprung senior forward
Ross Sloan (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Blades) into a breakaway chance, with only Brockport's goalie, Moore, to beat. Moore denied a shot from Sloan taken just outside the crease and sent the puck up into the netting to force a whistle and an ensuing face-off.
The Cardinals outshot the Golden Eagles, 44-29, for the contest. Brockport wound up going 1-for-6 on the power play, while Plattsburgh State was 0-for-2 with the extra skater.
