Late Goal Hurts No. 13/14 Men's Ice Hockey in 4-3 Loss to Potsdam

College Hockey Stats Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. – A comeback by the No. 13/14 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team was spoiled by a late game-winning goal, as the Cardinals fell to North Country rival SUNY Potsdam, 4-3, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Maxcy Ice Arena Saturday night.

Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 13 in the D3hockey.com Men's Top-15 Poll and No. 14 in the USCHO.com Men's Division III Top-15 Poll.

The Cardinals scored twice past the midway point of the third period to crawl out of a 3-1 deficit. Senior forward Pat Egan (Rochester, N.Y./Lone Star Brahmas) breathed life back into the Cardinals' cause with a goal 11:47 into the third. Senior defenseman Jakob Engvall (Jönköping, Sweden/Ogden Mustangs) sent a puck toward the net from the point, and senior forward Ryan Kuhn (Wheatfield, N.Y./Niagara University) took a backhanded shot attempt that was saved along the right side of the goal. Egan took advantage of the quick rebound and poked it into an unmanned net to make it a 3-2 game.

Sophomore forward Rich McCartney (Hershey, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution) scored 3:03 later to tie the game, deflecting in a shot from the point that came from junior defenseman Antoine Fournier-Gosselin (Saint-Lazare, Quebec/Cégep de Saint-Laurent) after junior forward Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, Quebec/Cégep de Saint-Laurent) won an offensive-zone face-off.

Potsdam's junior forward Vinny Guimond netted the game-winner with 2:21 left in regulation, as freshman forward Devin Panzeca led a 2-on-1 rush and passed to Guimond deep inside the Cardinals' zone. Panzeca's centering pass set up a Guimond goal that was scored stick side from the low slot.

A Cardinal penalty sustained with 2:06 left in regulation all but sealed the Potsdam victory, as Plattsburgh State was unable to put a shot on goal in the final minutes of the game while on the penalty kill.

Plattsburgh State drops to 3-1-1 overall (3-1-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and opens up the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut on Friday, Nov. 23, against Middlebury College at 4 p.m. The 2018 PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut is hosted by Norwich University. Potsdam rises to 4-3-0 overall (1-2-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits Colby College on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m.

Guimond put the Bears up, 1-0, 5:29 into the game, as Panzeca sprung him forward with a stretch pass. Guimond took a shot that was blocked before cashing in on the rebound.

Sophomore forward Liam Lawson (Vancouver, British Columbia/Powell River Paper Kings) tied the score at 1-all 10:49 into the first, as he dangled the puck in front of the Bear goaltender and tucked it inside of the right post. Sophomore forward Greg Malafronte (Colts Neck, N.J./New Jersey Titans) and Egan earned assists on the play.

The Bears received a pair of goals late in the second period to stake themselves to a 3-1 lead. Freshman forward Jack Bloem scored on a breakaway at the 17:32 mark of the second period thanks to a pass from junior forward Bryce Ferrell, while sophomore forward Joey Sollazzo scored unassisted with 39 seconds left in the second.

Plattsburgh State finished with a slight 41-40 edge in shots on goal but was unable to convert on any of its five power-play opportunities. Potsdam also was held scoreless with the extra skater, going 0-for-2 on the power play.

Sophomore goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) made 36 saves in the loss for the Cardinals, while senior goaltender Nate Skidmore turned aside 38 shots in the win for the Bears.
