Seidman's First-Half Goal Stands Up in Women's Soccer's 1-0 Win Over Cortland

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – After posting a pair of assists in a 3-1 win over Oswego State Friday, freshman forward/midfielder Allison Seidman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) continued to factor into scoring Saturday, as she netted the only goal in the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team's 1-0 victory over SUNY Cortland in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action at the Field House Complex.

Seidman's tally, which was her third of the season, came in the 29th minute. Senior defender Jessica Mangieri (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) played a ball through the air down the left side of the 18-yard box to junior forward Katie Matott (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton), and Matott drew the Red Dragon goalie off her line. Matott then sent a low cross to Seidman, who was unmarked inside the 6-yard box and buried the ball into the open net.

Plattsburgh State rises to 8-5-0 overall (2-3-0 SUNYAC) with the win and has now won three straight. The Cardinals, who are now tied for sixth in the SUNYAC standings with six points, next visit SUNY Oneonta on Friday, Oct. 12, for a 4 p.m. match. Cortland drops to 6-4-2 overall (2-2-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits Fredonia on Friday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m.

While the Cardinals emerged with the shutout victory, the Red Dragons challenged late with several scoring opportunities that sprung graduate student goalkeeper Taylor Adams (Schenectady, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) into action.

Senior forward Vanessa Romero nearly netted the equalizer in the 83rd minute. Cortland's sophomore goalkeeper Danika Svendsen sent a goal kick that landed in the midfield and bounced into the Red Dragons' offensive third. Romero picked up the ball around the top of the 18-yard box, shook off a Cardinal defender and took a shot from around 10 yards out that Adams denied with a diving save. A few minutes later, Romero took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box along the left wing, but Adams was there to make the stop.

Freshman defender Amanda Lobban fired a shot from the midfield with just under 20 seconds left as a last-ditch scoring effort, but Adams corralled the ball and eventually punted it back into the midfield, with time expiring shortly thereafter.

In what was an evenly-matched game, Cortland held a slight 18-17 edge in shots, while Plattsburgh State owned a slim 6-4 margin in corner kicks.

Adams earned her fifth shutout of the season, making eight saves in the victory for the Cardinals. Svendsen turned aside seven shots in net for the Red Dragons.
