Women’s Basketball Falls To Fredonia 66-57

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell, 66-57 to Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Saturday afternoon at the Steele Hall Field house.

Plattsburgh State is now 4-8 overall and 3-3 in the SUNYAC while Fredonia moves to 6-7, 4-2 in the conference.

Sophomore guard/forward Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) led the Cardinals with 13 points while sophomore forward Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) recorded her second consecutive double-double scoring 10 points and picking up 10 rebounds and added three assists. Sophomore forward Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) recorded  team high 13 rebounds and scored nine points.

The game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter and the Blue Devils had an eight point cushion three minutes into the second quarter. The Cardinal were able to cut it to two points but were never able to take the lead and headed into halftime down 31-28.

Fredonia went on a 12 point run to start the third quarter and took a 43-30 lead with 4:08 remaining. The Cardinals were able to cut the advantage to nine point with a layup from freshman guard Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn. / Cromwell) and a jumper by Merkel.

A layup by the Blue Devils at the end of the third put them up 51-40 heading into the final quarter.

The Cardinals rallied in the fourth out-scoring Fredonia 17-15. Durnin and Merkel started the fourth quarter off with a jumper and a layup to cut the lead to six points.

Four free throws from Fredonia put them up by ten and they took a 13 point edge with 3:40 left in the game. Durnin cut it back to eight points with two free throws and a jumper. Another layup from Durnin put the Cardinals within six points of the lead with 44 seconds remaining.

Four more free throws put the Blue Devils up by ten but a free throw from Merkel cut Fredonia's win to nine points.

Plattsburgh State out-rebounded Fredonia 39-35 and only had nine turnovers compared to the Blue Devils 16.

The Cardinals are on the road Friday, Jan. 12, to play SUNY Cortland at 5:30 p.m.
