CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) led the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team with a season-high 19 points in their 65-54 loss to SUNY Cortland Friday night inside Corey Gym.
DePasquale drained five three pointers and made all four free throws on top of picking up five rebounds and attaining two assist in her 40 minutes of play.
Sophomore guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) put up 11 points for the Cardinals and grabbed five rebounds while sophomore forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) continues to lead the team in rebounds with 11 tonight.
The Cardinals had 3 -2 lead early in the first quarter thanks to a three-pointer by Durnin but Red Dragons went on a ten point run to take a 12-3 edge.
A three-pointer by DePasquale and a layup from sophomore forward
Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) put Plattsburgh within four points. Clare made a free throw to end the quarter and the Cardinals headed into the second quarter down by three.
The Cardinals were able to keep the advantage to just three points for the majority of the second quarter but the Red Dragons ended the quarter with a three-pointer and a layup to head into halftime with a score of 32-24.
Plattsburgh State came out with a second wind in the third quarter out-scoring Cortland 16-12. The Red Dragons took a 14 point lead with 2:27 left and the Cardinals went on a ten point spree to end the quarter.
Guard/ forward
Lauren Lawliss (Peru, N.Y. / Peru) started it off with a layup, DePasquale drained a three, Merkel made a layup and DePasquale made another three-pointer to put Plattsburgh State within four points of the lead.
Cortland started the final quarter with a seven point run to take an 11 point cushion. Plattsburgh State cut it to six with 2:09 remaining but the Red Dragons capitalized on the Cardinals fouls and recorded five free throws to end the game and take the 11 point win.
Cortland out-rebounded Plattsburgh State 52-45 and scored 16 points off the Cardinals 10 turnovers.
The Cardinals are away Saturday, Jan. 13, at Oswego to play a conference game at 1 p.m.
