OSWEGO, N.Y. – Three Plattsburgh State women's basketball players scored in double digits Saturday evening to assist the Cardinals in their 73-55 win over Oswego State inside Max Ziel Gymnasium.
Plattsburgh State improves to 5-9 overall and 4-4 in the SUNYAC while Oswego moves to 5-10, 2-6 in the conference.
Junior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) led the Cardinals with 17 points and picked up five rebounds, sophomore forward
Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) scored 16 points and had a team high of nine rebounds while sophomore guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) recorded 14 points.
Oswego led 4-0 two minutes into the first quarter but DePasquale quickly cut the lead to one point with a three-pointer. The Lakers retaliated with a three pointer to take a four point edge.
The Cardinals tied the game 9-9 with a jumper from Merkel and a layup by Durnin with 5:51 remaining.
Oswego went on a seven point run and Plattsburgh State ended the quarter with a seven point spree of their own to tie the game 16-16 heading into the second quarter. DePasquale drained another three and Merkel made a layup and a jumper.
Plattsburgh State had a strong second quarter holding Oswego to just two points and out-scoring the Lakers by 20 points.
The Cardinals started the second out with a 13 point binge. Merkel made a layup, DePasquale had a layup, sophomore guard
Christina Testa (Oyster Bay, N.Y./Oyster Bay) put in a jumper, Durnin also had a jumper, Testa made a three-pointer and Durnin put in another jumper.
The Lakers made a layup in the sixth minute of the second quarter and the Cardinals retaliated with a nine point run. Junior guard
Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) started it off with a jumper, DePasquale drained another three, freshman guard
Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn. / Cromwell) put in a jumper and Merkel finished it with a jumper to give Plattsburgh State a 38-18 advantage heading into halftime.
The Cardinals took a 23 point edge to start off the third after DePasquale made a three-pointer and took their largest lead of 31 points in the seventh minute after Durnin made a layup and drained a three and DePasquale made another three.
Oswego ended the third quarter with a jumper and a layup to head into the final quarter down 56-29.
The Lakers out-scored the Cardinals 26-17 in the fourth quarter and ended the game with an eight point spree to cut Plattsburgh States win to 18 points.
Oswego out-rebounded Plattsburgh State 38-37 but the Cardinals were able to capitalize off the Lakers 23 turnovers and picked up 22 points.
Plattsburgh State returns home Friday, Jan. 19, to play SUNYAC foe Geneseo at 5:30 p.m.
