BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior forward
Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y. / Harborfields) led the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team with 29 points and 14 rebounds in their 96-83 win over Buffalo State Friday night inside Buffalo State Sports Arena.
Plattsburgh State improves to 6-4 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC while Buffalo State moves to 5-6 and 1-4 in the conference.
The Cardinals shot 82.9 percent from the free throw line including Patron making 7-10 and senior guard
Eric Mack (Roosevelt, N.Y./Baldwin) making 10-12. Mack also recorded double digit numbers scoring 23 points and picked up eight rebounds.
The Bengals took a 9-0 edge three minutes in but the Cardinals went on an eight point run to come within one point. Sophomore guard
Nick DeAngelis (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) started it with a three-pointer, junior guard/forward
Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) made two free throws and senior guard
Eli Bryant (Staten Island, N.Y./Michael J. Petrides School) drained a three.
Patron made a layup to take a one point edge but Buffalo State took it back with a layup. Patron put in two more layups to give the Cardinals a three point advantage.
The Bengals put in two more baskets to take the lead back but the Cardinals went on a seven point bender to take a six point cushion. Bryant made a layup, Mack put in two free throws and Patron put in a free throw and layup.
Patron extended the lead to nine with a layup and free throw after Buffalo State put in a three and DeAngelis drained a three to counter.
Plattsburgh State took an eleven point edge with six minutes left and Buffalo State cut it to five with 54 second remaining. Freshman guard
Travis Cox (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Frederick Douglass Academy) made a layup to end the half and put the Cardinals up 44-37.
The Cardinals had a ten point cushion five minutes into the second half but the Bengals took a one point advantage with 9:57 left.
The game was tied four times before Plattsburgh State went on a ten point spree to take back the lead. Mack dunked the ball and made a layup, Bryant and Middleton both made layups and DeAngelis put in two free throws to take an 89-79 advantage.
Buffalo State made a layup and Plattsburgh State went on a seven point bender. Patron made a layup and free throw and Mack and Bryant each made two free throws.
The Bengals were able to put in one more basket to cut the Cardinals win to 13 points.
Plattsburgh State out-rebounded Buffalo State 49-20 and scored 24 points off Bengals turnovers.
The Cardinals are on the road Saturday at Fredonia to play a conference game at 3 p.m.
