No. 1/2 Women's Ice Hockey Resumes NEWHL Play with 3-0 Shutout Win Over Buffalo State

College Hockey Stats Box Score

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Junior forward Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) scored twice, as the No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team resumed Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) play with a 3-0 victory over Buffalo State on Friday afternoon at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 1 in the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll and No. 2 in the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll.

Moriarty upped her season goal total to 15, which moved her for a tie for second in NCAA Division III. She also took over the Division III lead in power-play goals with seven and extended her lead in game-winning goals with seven.

The Cardinals finished with a 35-15 edge in shots and went 1-for-5 on the power play. The Bengals were held scoreless in four chances with the extra skater.

Plattsburgh State rises to 12-2-0 overall (7-0-0 NEWHL) with the win, while Buffalo State drops to 8-7-1 overall (4-3-0 NEWHL) with the loss. The two teams finish out the weekend series tomorrow at 2 p.m.

After a scoreless first period, Moriarty put the Cardinals on the board 4:15 into the second stanza by scoring shorthanded. Plattsburgh State dumped the puck into its offensive zone late on a penalty kill, and junior forward Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) stole the puck from a Bengal defender along the right boards. She then passed the puck through the legs of another Buffalo State defender to Moriarty in the slot, who scored low stick side and slid after the finish.

Moriarty struck again late in the second period, finding the back of the net on the power play with 16:07 gone in the frame. On the face-off following the penalty, the Cardinals won the draw and got the puck to junior defenseman Baye Flanagan (Billerica, Mass./Merrimack College) on the left point. Flanagan fed senior forward Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) at the bottom of the left face-off circle, and Meneghin set up Moriarty with a centering pass into the slot.

Junior forward Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) put the game on ice 1:30 into the third, scoring unassisted. She stole the puck from a Buffalo State student-athlete in the left corner, skated into the slot and scored low on the goalie's glove side.

Junior goaltender Kassi Abbott (North Billerica, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) turned aside 15 shots in the win to earn her NCAA Division III-leading sixth shutout of the season. Abbott also took over the Division III lead in goals-against average (0.78) and save percentage (.967). Buffalo State's senior goaltender Justine Silva made 32 saves in the loss.
