BUFFALO, N.Y. – The No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team completed a Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) sweep of Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon at the Buffalo State Ice Arena, defeating the Bengals by a 4-0 final.
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 1 in the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll and No. 2 in the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll.
Despite the lopsided final score, Buffalo State challenged Plattsburgh State in shots, with the Cardinals holding a slight 31-28 edge. Plattsburgh State did, however, go 2-for-8 on the power play and limited Buffalo State to a 0-for-6 performance with the extra attacker.
Plattsburgh State rises to 13-2-0 overall (8-0-0 NEWHL) with the win and next hosts SUNY Cortland from Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 20-21. Buffalo State drops to 8-8-1 overall (4-4-0 NEWHL) with the loss and next visits SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m.
Following a scoreless first period, junior forward
Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) buried her 16th goal of the season 4:40 into the second. Freshman defenseman
Erin McArdle (Macomb, Mich./Detroit Belle Tire) took the puck away in the Cardinals' defensive zone and passed off the boards to junior forward
Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) in the neutral zone. Songin found Moriarty in the team's offensive zone, and Moriarty went top shelf from inside the left face-off circle. With the goal, Moriarty extended her NCAA Division III lead in game-winning goals with eight and moved into a tie for second in goals scored.
It was McArdle's turn to enter the goal column 7:47 into the second period when she scored on the power play. Sophomore forward
Meghan Kraus (Bellingham, Wash./Northern Cyclones) fed McArdle with a pass from the left point, and McArdle scored from just inside the blue line to extend the Cardinal advantage to 2-0. Freshman forward
Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Pens Elite) also earned an assist on the play, her first as an intercollegiate student-athlete.
Kraus made it a 3-0 game with 15:59 gone in the third, as she skated from the defensive zone to the offensive zone on a breakaway and scored backhanded glove side from inside the slot. Freshman defenseman

Emma Killeen (Watertown, Conn./The Gunnery) each picked up assists on the goal.
Finally, senior forward
Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) netted her 10th goal of the season with 15:06 elapsed in the third period on the power play. Senior forward
Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) dropped the puck off to Moriarty on the right point, and Moriarty skated inside the right face-off circle. Moriarty dished it to a wide open Meneghin along the left side of the slot, and Meneghin went five-hole on the goalie.
Sheeran padded her Division III lead in assists with the helper on the Cardinals' final goal, moving her season total to 19. She also leads Division III in scoring with 28 points.
Senior goaltender
Brooke Wolejko (South Windsor, Conn./St. Lawrence University) posted her fourth shutout of the season, making 28 saves. Wolejko and junior goaltender
Kassi Abbott (North Billerica, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite) have traded the Division III lead in save percentage and goals-against average the past few games, and Wolejko took over the top of the list in both categories again, improving her save percentage to .972 and her goals-against average to 0.67. Senior goaltender Justine Silva made 27 saves in the loss for Buffalo State.
