POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team saw its offense clicking on all cylinders in its 2017 season debut, scoring four goals in each half to down the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 8-0, on day one of the Potsdam College Cup on Friday at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Turf Field.
The Cardinals dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 24-2 margin in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Plattsburgh State rises to 1-0 overall with the win and faces Baruch College tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out action at the Potsdam College Cup. Mount Saint Vincent drops to 0-1 overall with the loss and matches up with host Potsdam tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
Junior forward
Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) opened scoring in the 14th minute, cashing in on a feed from sophomore midfielder
Connor Nembach (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West). Sophomore midfielder
Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) scored on a pass from senior forward
Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) in the 21st minute, and 58 seconds later, the Nembach-to-Robertson connection proved fruitful once again. Sophomore forward
Kyle Pfaff (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored unassisted in the 39th minute to enter halftime with a 4-0 advantage.
Pfaff scored his second goal of the game in the 57th minute, finding the back of the net on a pass by junior defender
CJ Barbontin-Jimenez (Tracy, Calif./Merrill F. West), and junior forward
Austin Tetreault (Rouses Point, N.Y./Northeastern Clinton) got involved in the action with two consecutive goals, which were assisted by freshman forward
Yusif Okine (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) and senior midfielder
Sean Maruscsak (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), respectively. Tetreault registered an assist on the final goal of the game with less than two minutes left, as Maruscsak scored on a breakaway.
Plattsburgh State's goalkeepers combined for a shutout, with sophomore
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) earning the start and sophomore
Kiernan Kirby (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) making one save in his 30:45 played. Mount Saint Vincent's netminders combined for six stops.
