POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team won the Potsdam College Cup for the third time in program history, defeating Baruch College, 3-1, at SUNY Potsdam's Maxcy Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals also won the Potsdam College Cup in 2013 and 2015.
Junior forward
Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) earned Tournament MVP honors, while senior midfielder
Ian Spear (Peru, N.Y./Peru), sophomore midfielder
Connor Nembach (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and junior forward
Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) joined him on the All-Tournament Team.
Despite a deadlocked 1-all score at intermission, Plattsburgh State scored two early goals in the second half to stake itself to what ended up being an insurmountable lead. Baruch sustained a red card toward the end of the first half and ended up having to play a man down for nearly 60 minutes.
Plattsburgh State rises to 2-0 overall with the win and opens up a five-game home stand on Tuesday, Sept. 5, against Skidmore College at 6 p.m. Baruch drops to 0-2 overall with the loss and hosts St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Baruch scored first, as sophomore forward Dortion Alipaj converted on a feed from freshman forward Frank Iacovano in the 11th minute. Robertson netted the equalizer at 17:23, using a pass from junior defender
John LaTouche (Salisbury Mills, N.Y./Washingtonville) to beat the Bearcat keeper. Late in the first half, Baruch weathered a storm of offensive opportunities in its defensive third, and the two teams remained knotted at 1-all at the half.
Price headed in a cross from LaTouche in the 55th minute to take the lead, and Robertson put the game on ice in the 60th minute with an unassisted marker.
Plattsburgh State finished the game with a 19-4 edge in shots and an 11-0 cushion in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) made three saves in the winning effort for the Cardinals, while his counterpart, sophomore goalkeeper Victor Torres, made 11 stops.
