Saccocio Scores Two, Gibson Gets Shutout In Cardinals Home Opener Win

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 win over Castleton University Friday night at the Field House Soccer Complex.

Senior Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schalmont) netted both Cardinal goals within six minutes of one another. Her first came in the 15th minute off a cross from Ernesta McIntosh (Lincoln, Vt. / Mt. Abraham) and scored in the bottom left corner from inside the box.

Saccocio's second goal came in the 21st minute off a throw in that fed the ball to Cait Gagen (East Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) on the right side which caused a scramble between Gagen and the keeper. Gagen took control of the ball and crossed it over for Saccocio to put it in the top left corner.

The Cardinals out shot the Spartans 20-8 for the contest.

Cardinal goalie Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y. / Arkport) recorded her first shutout of the season making five saves in her 90 minutes of play.

Plattsburgh State is now 1-0 to start the year and will have the rest of the weekend to rest before its next game on Tuesday night against Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
