ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior attackman
Ryan Hubbard (Aquebogue, N.Y./Riverhead) scored with 1.4 seconds left in regulation to lift the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team to a 7-6 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) win over SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday afternoon at Red Dragon Field.
After Oneonta tied the game at 6-all with 17 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the Red Dragons' junior face-off specialist Troy Stasko won the ensuing face-off and scooped up the ground ball. Stasko ended up committing a costly turnover, however, as senior long-stick midfielder
Kyle Espejo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) picked the ball out of the air and found junior defensive midfielder
Nicco Narbutas (Holbrook, N.Y./Miller Place), who successfully moved the Cardinals into their offensive zone.
Narbutas then connected with a wide-open Hubbard, who was less than 10 yards out from the goal. Hubbard subsequently ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Cardinals a 7-6 advantage with just 1.4 seconds on the clock. Neither team was able to control the ball on the ensuing face-off, and Plattsburgh State escaped with the win.
Plattsburgh State rises to 7-4 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits The College at Brockport on Saturday, April 15, at 12 p.m. Oneonta drops to 3-8 overall (0-3 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits Oswego State next on Saturday, April 15, at 1 p.m.
Hubbard scored unassisted just 20 seconds into the game, while Oneonta tied the game nearly two minutes later, as junior attackman Nick Eiseman cashed in on a feed from junior midfielder TJ Kilmetis. After defense prevailed for much of the remainder of the first quarter, Hubbard tallied with two seconds left in the period to stake the Cardinals to a 2-1 lead through 15 minutes of play.
Senior midfielder
Nick DeCeglia (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) converted on a pass from senior midfielder
Mike Gay (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) 1:58 into the second quarter before junior midfielder AJ Solomito scored for Oneonta minutes later. Gay picked up his second assist of the afternoon on a goal by sophomore attackman
Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) midway through the period, while senior attackman
Ryan Callahan (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) buried a ball past the Red Dragon goalie with 2:10 remaining in the second quarter to hand Plattsburgh State a 5-2 halftime lead.
Oneonta inched closer in the third, with junior attackman Ryan Curley scoring unassisted early in the period before assisting on an Eiseman marker with 2:31 left in the quarter. Eiseman's goal cut the gap to 5-4.
Gay extended the Cardinal cushion back out to two with a goal midway through the fourth, while Oneonta stormed back late in the period. Following a Plattsburgh State timeout with 58 seconds left, the Cardinals turned it over, and Oneonta successfully moved the ball past its offensive restraining line. Junior midfielder John Shea then set up Curley for a tally with 28 seconds remaining to pull the Red Dragons within one. Oneonta called timeout, then won the ensuing face-off thanks to heads-up play by its face-off man, Stasko. Eiseman quickly got the ball to Solomito, who found the back of the cage with 17 seconds remaining to tie the score at 6-all.
Oneonta finished with a 39-35 edge in shots, while Plattsburgh State posted a 28-25 margin in ground balls. The Red Dragons were superior at the X, going 12-for-17 on face-offs, while the Cardinals were better in transition, going 16-for-17 on clears compared to a 12-for-16 showing by Oneonta. Plattsburgh State went 1-for-4 on extra-man opportunities, while Oneonta was unable to score on its four extra-man chances.
Hubbard tallied three goals to push his career total to 99, while Gay also registered three points with one goal and two assists. Carroll, Callahan and DeCeglia also scored goals for the Cardinals, while Narbutas also collected an assist. Hubbard helped Plattsburgh State in the possession game, too, with five ground balls.
For Oneonta, Curley (two goals, one assist) and Eiseman (two goals, one assist) each picked up three points, while Solomito scored twice. Shea and Kilmetis each finished with an assist. Sophomore midfielder Shane Carroll scooped up a game-high eight ground balls, while Stasko went 12-for-17 on face-offs.
Plattsburgh State's junior goalie
Austin Graham (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) made six saves in the win to rise to 3-2 for the season, while his counterpart, sophomore goalie Andrew Helfman, turned aside 13 shots in the loss for Oneonta.
