BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior attackman
Ryan Hubbard (Aquebogue, N.Y./Riverhead) scored his 100th career goal, helping the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team down The College at Brockport, 15-11, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Bob Boozer Field.
Hubbard, who entered the day with 99 career markers, scored career goal No. 100 with just six seconds left in the first quarter and finished the afternoon with 103 to his name. Hubbard, a junior, becomes just the sixth Cardinal to reach the 100-goal plateau.
The Cardinals trailed the Golden Eagles, 7-5, at halftime, but Plattsburgh State tied the game late in the third quarter and outscored Brockport, 5-1, in the fourth to pull out the win. It marked a measure of revenge for the Cardinals, who lost a pair of one-goal games to the Golden Eagles last year, including a 7-6 setback in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals.
Plattsburgh State rises to 8-4 overall (3-0 SUNYAC) with the win and wraps up its regular season with three straight home games, beginning with a 1 p.m. encounter with SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, April 22. Brockport slips to 5-5 overall (1-2 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m.
Brockport jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by senior attackmen Jake Giudice and Mark Robinson and senior midfielder Brendan Fitzgerald, while Plattsburgh State countered with four unanswered scores. Senior attackman
Ryan Callahan (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) scored unassisted with 3:11 left in the first quarter before connecting with junior midfielder
Billy Moller (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) for a goal less than a minute later. Hubbard used a feed from junior midfielder
Brad Johnston (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) to score with six seconds left in the period, and on the ensuing face-off, junior face-off specialist
Joe Eiseman (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) won the draw, scooped up the ground ball and scored with one second left to stake the Cardinals to a 4-3 edge through 15 minutes of play.
Sophomore attackman Liam Cannon scored back-to-back goals for Brockport in the opening minutes of the second quarter, and his second score came off a feed from Robinson. Senior midfielder
Mike Gay (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Connetquot) found Callahan for a goal midway through the second to tie the game at 5-all, but two late markers by Fitzgerald (on a Robinson feed) and Cannon (on a Fitzgerald pass) gave the home team a 7-5 lead heading into halftime.
Junior midfielder
Brandon Heimbuch (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) cashed in on a Callahan pass just 1:12 into the third quarter, and six seconds later, Brockport's Giudice scored on a face-off win and pass from junior midfielder/face-off specialist Zach Cook. Giudice connected with sophomore attackman Matt Malecki for a goal with 4:33 elapsed in the period to give the Golden Eagles a 9-6 lead, but Moller and sophomore midfielder
Joe Mineau (Albany, N.Y./Colonie) scored on passes by Hubbard and senior midfielder
Austin Belz (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), respectively, to pull within one. Brockport received a marker from sophomore attackman Jake Recor on a Robinson pass with 5:55 left in the quarter, while Heimbuch scored on a Hubbard feed and Hubbard converted on a pass from junior face-off specialist
Travis Mauro (Northport, N.Y./Northport) to knot the score at 10-all heading into the final regulation period. Heimbuch and Hubbard's goals started what wound up being a 7-0 run that stretched two quarters.
From that point forward, it was all Plattsburgh State. Callahan and sophomore attackman
Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) each scored in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, while Hubbard struck less than a minute after Carroll's tally. Callahan and Hubbard each scored inside two minutes, with Hubbard's goal being assisted by senior long-stick midfielder
Kyle Espejo (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), while Brockport's junior face-off specialist Michael Caternolo found Giudice for the final goal of the game with 47 seconds left.
Brockport finished with a 44-42 edge in shots and a 37-29 cushion in ground balls, while Plattsburgh State carried the ball well in transition, going 17-for-19 on clears. With extra-man opportunities coming at a premium, each team was 0-for-1 in that department for the game. The Golden Eagles held a slight edge at the X, going 15-for-28 on face-offs.
Hubbard and Callahan each finished with six points on four goals and two assists, while Moller and Heimbuch each scored twice. Plattsburgh State received one-goal performances from Carroll, Eiseman and Mineau and one-assist outings from Espejo, Mauro, Johnston, Belz and Gay. Mauro won eight ground balls and also went 11-for-23 on face-offs.
For Brockport, Giudice and Robinson each tallied four points, with Giudice scoring three goals and adding an assist and Robinson scoring one goal and offering up three assists. Fitzgerald (two goals, one assist) and Cannon (three goals) both ended up with three points, while other point-getters included Recor, Cook, Malecki and Caternolo. Cook went 8-for-14 at the X and finished with six ground balls, while Caternolo went 7-for-14 on face-offs and scooped up six ground balls as well.
Plattsburgh State's junior goalie
Austin Graham (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) stood tall in the win, making a career-high 17 stops en route to the victory. His counterpart, senior goalie Conor Nowak, turned aside nine shots in the loss for Brockport.
