LEESBURG, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team lost twice at the National Training Center Spring Games on Thursday, falling, 4-0, to Framingham State before dropping a 12-1 decision in six innings to the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Plattsburgh State drops to 5-7 overall with the losses and next faces the University of Rochester (3:30 p.m.) and Keene State (6 p.m.) tomorrow. Framingham State rises to 5-4 and RIT climbs to 10-3 with the wins.
Game 1: Framingham State 4, Plattsburgh State 0
After two scoreless innings, Framingham State scored one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a 4-0 lead that stood up for the final inning and a half.
The Cardinals had three hits in the loss, with sophomore shortstop
Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall), junior second baseman
Amanda Tantillo (Florida, N.Y./S.S. Seward) and junior third baseman
Jackie Decker (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson) each notching a hit. Notably, Preiss stretched her hitting streak to 11 to start the season, and she has registered a hit in 12 straight games dating back to last season. Preiss also has reached base safely by either a hit, walk or hit by pitch in each of her last 16 contests dating back to 2016.
Senior second baseman Rachel Desrochers paced the Ram bats out of the nine hole, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a double.
Junior pitcher
Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) was saddled with the loss, yielding four runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. Junior pitcher
Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and allowed just three hits. Sophomore pitcher Kelsi Gunarathne picked up the win for Framingham State, throwing a three-hit shutout. She struck out seven batters during the contest.
Game 2: RIT 12, Plattsburgh State 1 (6 inn.)
Plattsburgh State held the lead for four innings until RIT's offense sprung to life in the fifth and sixth innings, erupting for 12 runs over those two frames.
Decker launched a two-out, solo home run over the fence in the bottom of the first to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 advantage, and that lead held up until the Tigers' two big innings late. During those two stanzas, the Tigers were limited to just four hits, but they showed a great amount of discipline at the plate in drawing 12 walks during that span.
While Preiss' 11-game hitting streak to start the season came to an end, the Cardinals relied on a multi-hit game from junior left fielder
Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) to go along with Decker's home run in a 1-for-3 day for the Adams, N.Y., native. RIT posted a pair of multi-hit performances, with freshman third baseman Erin Guinan and senior center fielder Tori Blaker each going 2-for-3.
Freshman pitcher
Rhea Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) sustained the loss for the Cardinals, while RIT's senior pitcher Sierra Valentine posted the win.
