LEESBURG, Fla. – The Plattsburgh State softball team won twice at the National Training Center Spring Games on Friday, defeating the University of Rochester, 3-0, before topping Keene State, 6-2.
The Cardinals rise to 7-7 overall with the wins and close out their spring break trip tomorrow when they face Westfield State University (9 a.m.) and Kalamazoo College (11:30 a.m.). Rochester drops to 9-3 and Keene State slips to 6-6 with the losses.
Game 1: Plattsburgh State 3, Rochester 0
Plattsburgh State scored twice in the second inning and added an insurance run in the sixth to post a 3-0 shutout win over the Yellowjackets.
Senior first baseman
Hope VanBrocklin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) put the Cardinals on the board in the second with an RBI double, and sophomore right fielder
Amy Glashoff (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) plated VanBrocklin during the next at-bat to make it a 2-0 game. Junior designated player
Felicia Torres (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) capped off scoring in the contest with an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth.
Sophomore shortstop
Kaitlyn Preiss (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) returned to her efficient hitting ways, going 3-for-3 with a stolen base. Glashoff also had a multi-hit outing, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Four different Yellowjackets rapped out hits.
Junior pitcher
Katie Pitkin (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) notched her second complete-game shutout of the season, yielding just four hits while striking out seven. Rochester used two different pitchers in the loss, with senior Sam Malecki being the pitcher of record in six innings pitched.
Game 2: Plattsburgh State 6, Keene State 2
After Keene State scored two runs in the top of the first, Plattsburgh State scored six unanswered the rest of the contest to cruise to the victory.
Junior first baseman Olivia Indorf handed the Owls a 2-0 advantage in the first, driving in two runs on a single. Plattsburgh State countered by tying the game in the home half of the inning, scoring a pair of runs on an error.
Freshman first baseman
Haleigh Agans (Brasher Falls, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) gave the Cardinals the lead with a solo homer in the second, and Preiss drove in a run three batters later to push the Plattsburgh State advantage to 4-2. The Cardinals scored a run off another Owl miscue in the fifth before VanBrocklin completed the game's scoring in the sixth with an RBI single to right field.
Preiss and VanBrocklin each went 2-for-4 to pace the Cardinal bats, while five different Keene State batters reached base by means of a hit.
Pitkin allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings before handing the reins off to junior pitcher
Taylor Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville), who held Keene State scoreless in 4 1/3 frames of relief work. Sophomore pitcher Molly St. Germain was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on nine hits, two hit by pitches and a walk.
