BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior guard
Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) led the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team in their 58-56 comeback win in overtime over the College at Brockport Friday evening to improve to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC while Brockport drops to 2-6 and 0-3 in the conference.
Thompson recorded a season high of 18 points, was 8-10 on free throws, had four assists, picked up six rebounds and two steals.
The Cardinals led 5-0 to start with a three-pointer form sophomore guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) and a jumper by sophomore forward
Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster).
The Golden Eagles went on a 13 point run to take an eight point cushion with 3:54 left in the first quarter but three-pointers by junior guard
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y. / Ardsley) and sophomore guard
Brooke Benna (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) cut the lead to two points.
Brockport went on a six point bender for another eight point advantage but freshman guard
Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn. / Cromwell) was able to make a layup before the quarter ended and the Cardinals went into the second down 22-16.
The Golden Eagles started the second quarter with another six point spree but the Cardinals retaliated with a seven point run of their own.
Durnin started it with a three-pointer followed by a three from Thrompson and freshman forward
Jordan Kastanis (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Roy C. Ketcham) made a free throw to cut the lead to five points.
Durnin made another three-pointer to end the quarter and Plattsburgh State headed into halftime down 31-28.
The Cardinals went on another seven point run to tie the game 40-40 with 57 seconds left in the third quarter. Thompson started it with two free throws, Durnin had another three-pointer and Thompson tied it with two more free throws.
Brockport made one free throw for a one point edge but Thompson capitalized on a Golden Eagle foul and finished the third quarter with two more free throws to head into the final quarter leading 42-41.
The game was tied four times in the fourth forcing it into overtime with a score of 50-50.
Freshman guard/ forward
Lauren Lawliss (Peru, N.Y. / Peru) put in a three-pointer to start overtime and sophomore forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) made a free throw to give Plattsburgh State a three point margin.
Brockport tied the game 54-54 but DePasquale drained a three to take the lead back and Thompson put in a free throw after the Golden Eagles made a layup to secure the two point win.
Durnin recorded 12 points and picked up five rebounds. Depasquale had six points and six rebounds, Kastanis had a team high of nine rebounds and Clare had a team high four blocks.
Plattsburgh State is away Saturday, Dec. 9, to play Geneseo in a conference game at 1 p.m.
