Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) recorded a career high 25 points and sophomore guard/forward
Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y. / Northern Adirondack) put up a career high 16 points in the Plattsburgh State women's basketball 101-92 loss to Western Connecticut State Sunday evening inside Feldman Arena.
Plattsburgh moves to 3-7 overall while Western Connecticut improves to 5-4.
Thompson was 3-4 from behind the arc and 8-9 from the free throw line while was Durnin was 10-12 from the free throw line and 3-3 in field goals.
The Cardinals were ahead 32-26 after the first quarter but the Colonials went on a 13 point run to start the second quarter and were up 39-32 with 7:51 left.
Junior guard/forward
Bella DePasquale (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley) put in a three-pointer and Western Connecticut went on a 10 point bender to take a 49-35 edge.
Sophomore guard
Brooke Benna (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) drained a three to cut the lead to 11 points but the Colonials put in two free throws to take a 13 point advantage.
The Cardinals retaliated with a layup from freshman guard/ forward
Lauren Lawliss (Peru, N.Y. / Peru) and Durnin had two layups to cut the lead to seven.
The Colonials put up five more points before the end of the quarter and freshman guard
Hanna Whitney (Keene, N.Y. / Keene Central) put in a jumper for the Cardinals to head into halftime down 58-48.
Western Connecticut out-scored Plattsburgh State 30-22 in the third quarter but the Cardinals put up a battle in the fourth out-scoring the Colonials 22-16.
The Cardinals went on a nine point run in the fourth to cut the Colonials lead from 22 points to 13. Sophomore forward
Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) put in a layup, Thompson made a jumper then drained a three and Durnin put in two free throws.
With two minutes remaining in the game Thompson drained another three, sophomore forward
Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) made a free throw and Durnin made two more free throws to come within seven points.
Western Colonial capitalized off a Plattsburgh State foul to finish the game with two free throws and take the nine point win.
Plattsburgh State out-shot Western Connecticut 50.8%- 31.4% but 40 turnovers aided the Colonials in 55 points.
DePasquale and Merkel both recorded 12 points and eight rebounds and Lawliss had 11 points.
Plattsburgh State returns to action January 5 in Buffalo, N.Y. to play Buffalo State at 5:30 p.m.
