PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The No. 1/1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team gained some momentum to use the rest of the season with a 3-0 exhibition game victory over the Toronto Jr. Aeros on Saturday afternoon at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh State is ranked at No. 1 in both the USCHO.com Women's Division III Top-10 Poll and the D3hockey.com Women's Top-10 Poll.
The Cardinals won due in large part to strong goaltending by senior
Brooke Wolejko (South Windsor, Conn./St. Lawrence University). Wolejko posted a 33-save shutout, which included 26 stops during the second and third periods combined. Natalie Thompson shouldered the loss for the Aeros, making 17 saves against two goals allowed in 29:58 of action.
Plattsburgh State returns to Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) action on Saturday, Nov. 18, when it hosts Oswego State for a 3 p.m. contest.
Freshman forward
Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons) opened scoring midway through the first period. She passed the puck to freshman forward
Annie Katonka (Pittsburgh, Pa./Pittsburgh Pens Elite), who skated behind the goal line and sent it back to Drew-Mead inside the left face-off circle. Drew-Mead beat the goalie glove side to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Just 36 seconds into the second period, junior forward
Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) intercepted an Aero clearance attempt in the Cardinals' offensive zone and beat the Aero goaltender stick side on a tight angle to put Plattsburgh State on top, 2-0.
Finally, with 1:20 remaining in regulation, sophomore forward
Meghan Kraus (Bellingham, Wash./Northern Cyclones) added insurance to the Cardinals' cause. Junior forward
Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) won a defensive-zone face-off that went to sophomore defenseman
Hannah Kiraly (Glendale, Ariz./Northern Cyclones) along the boards. Kiraly sent a pass to junior forward
Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon), who was at the defensive zone blue line, and Moriarty passed the puck forward to Kraus, who just had the goalie to beat. She flipped a backhanded shot top shelf to round out the scoring in the contest.
The Aeros finished the game with a slight 33-32 edge in shots, while the two teams combined to go 0-for-13 on the power play.
