PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.- Sophomore defenseman
Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) scored her first two collegiate goals in the Plattsburgh State women's soccer 3-0 win over Cortland in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) semifinal game on Wednesday evening at the Field House Soccer Complex.
The second-seeded Cardinals rise to 13-4-2 and will visit the top-seeded Geneseo Knights Saturday, Nov. 4, for the SUNYAC championship game at 1 p.m. The third-seeded Red Dragons finish their season 10-5-3.
Plattsburgh State took control of the game from the get-go, out-shooting Cortland 15-2 in the first half.
Bonner scored her first goal in the 36
th minute when
Sarah Haight (East Meredith, N.Y. / Charlotte Valley) played the ball up the right side and crossed it to the front of the net where Bonner headed it into the right top corner.
Plattsburgh kept possession of the ball for the remainder of the half and recorded three more shots before the clock ran down to lead 1-0 at halftime.
Cortland came out more determined in the second half recording five shots in the opening nine minutes but could not find the back of the net as junior goalkeeper
Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y. / Arkport) made four saves to keep the Red Dragons side of the scoreboard blank.
Bonner recorded her second goal in the 75
th minute off a corner kick from Haight that Bonner ran in for and headed the ball into the bottom right corner to give the Cardinals a two goal advantage.
Five minutes later
Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y. / Schalmont) scored her 16
th goal of the season off a pass from the left side to the center by
Cait Gagen (East Syracuse, N.Y. / East Syracuse-Minoa) that Saccocio put in past the keeper into the bottom left corner.
Cortland had two shots in the remaining ten minutes trying hard to keep from getting shutout but the Cardinals defense kept up the battle and was victorious in the end.
Plattsburgh State recorded 27 shots, 10 on goal, compared to Cortland's 12, seven on goal.
Gibson logged her seventh shutout of the season and 12
th win, making seven saves in her 90:00 minutes between the pipes.
Bonner had eight of the Cardinals shots, three on net with two goals. Saccocio also had eight shots, five on net with one goal. Haight recorded six shots, two on goal and had two assists.
The Cardinals are looking for their second SUNYAC title in the programs history. The last time Plattsburgh State was in the SUNYAC final was in 2010 and the last time they won the title was in 1998.
