GENESEO, N.Y.- The second-seeded Plattsburgh State women's soccer team found themselves on the wrong side of a 4-0 decision in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship game as they lost to top-seeded No. 12/14 Geneseo Saturday afternoon at College Stadium.
Plattsburgh State falls to 13-5-2 while Geneseo moves to 16-1-2. The Knights will receive an automatic bid for the NCAA Division III Tournament while the Cardinals will wait to receive notice of their future endeavors.
The Knights scored ten minutes into the game and again in the 31
st minute to lead 2-0 heading into halftime. Geneseo out-shot Plattsburgh State 11-6 in the first half and accumulated four corner kicks while the Cardinals had none.
Junior goalkeeper
Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y. / Arkport) kept the Cardinals afloat making seven saves in the first half alone to keep them from falling deeper into a rut.
Senior forward
Sarah Haight (East Meredith, N.Y. / Charlotte Valley) had both of Plattsburgh State's shots on goal in the first.
The Cardinals came into the second half with more determination out-shooting the Knight 8-5 but Geneseo recorded two more goals two minutes apart to take a four goal lead.
Audrey Reid capitalized off a penalty kick in the 63
rd minute and scored again in the 65
th to pick up her 18
th and 19
th goals on the season.
Gibson unfortunately took the loss but made nine saves in her 90:00 in goal.
Gibson rightfully so made the 2017 SUNYAC All-Tournament team along with senior defender
Brooke Knight (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and sophomore defenseman
Sarah Bonner (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown).
The Cardinals now await their fate, which will be determined when the women's selections for the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Tournament are announced Monday morning. Plattsburgh State must receive an at-large bid to participate in the NCAA tournament.
