Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 6/16 Cortland To Head To SUNYAC Finals

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Plattsburgh State men's soccer team beat top-seeded No. 6/16 Cortland in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) semifinal game in a 3-1 upset Wednesday afternoon at Jets Field.

The Cardinals rise to 13-6-1 and will visit second-seeded Oneonta Saturday, Nov. 4, for the SUNYAC championship game at 1 p.m. Cortland ends their season 13-3.

The game proved to be a physical one with ten combined fouls and one yellow card on Cortland in the 16th minute. Cortland received another yellow card in the 36th minute and Plattsburgh State got their first yellow in the 38th minute.

Cortland out-shot Plattsburgh State 8-2 but neither team found the back of the net as each keeper made one save to head into halftime tied 0-0.

Cortland found the back of the net in the 50th minute when Dan Figarella knocked the ball in off a pass from Miguel Tunas.

Sophomore defender Joe Gula (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) retaliated eight minutes later when sophomore midfielder Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y. / Plainedge) played the ball down the left side and fed it over to Gula who headed it in.

With the game tied 1-1 it began to get more risky with five more fouls being drawn between the Cardinals and Red Dragons before a red card was given to Cortland after Drew DeJohn received his second yellow. Not even thirty seconds after the red card Cortland received another yellow card.

Plattsburgh State capitalized in the 74th minute when Marchena scored unassisted with a one-timer from 35-yards out to the inside of the left post.

After receiving a yellow card in the 80th minute the Cardinals scored again in the 83rd, this time with a three-on-two break. Junior forward Alex Price (Plattsburgh, N.Y. / Beekmantown) scored on the right side after senior forward Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y. / Clarkstown South) fed him the ball.

Cortland received another yellow card in the 83rd minute and recorded four more shots in the remaining six minutes before the clock ran out and Plattsburgh State took the two-goal victory.

The Red Dragons out-shot Plattsburgh State 22-11 and noted 14 fouls compared to the Cardinals 13.

Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) recorded his 11th win logging five saves in his 90:00 in goal.

Laurent had four of the Cardinals shots, one on goal. Marchena had three shots, all on goal and Gula and Price each had two shots, both on net and had one goal.

The Cardinals are looking to win their ninth SUNYAC title in program history. The last time Plattsburgh State was in the SUNYAC final was in 2013 when they won the title.
