Laurent, Maldanado, Machena Make All-Tournament Team; No. 7/11 Oneonta Tops Plattsburgh State 2-1 In SUNYAC Title Game

ONEONTA, N.Y.- The fifth-seeded Plattsburgh State men's soccer team took a one goal loss to second-seeded No. 7/11 Oneonta in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship game Saturday at Red Dragons Field.

Plattsburgh State drops to 13-7-1 while Oneonta moves to 15-1-2 and will receive an automatic bid for the NCAA Division III Tournament.

After receiving a yellow card, Oneonta scored in the 21st minute off a cross in front of the net to get on the scoreboard first.

Plattsburgh State obtained their own yellow in the 25th minute as the game began to get more callous.

The Cardinals remained calm the remaining twenty minutes of the first half and tried tirelessly to tie the game recording five shots to the Red Dragons three, two of which were blocked by Plattsburgh State's defense. Plattsburgh State was unable to put one in the back of the net and went into halftime down by one.

In the 54th minute sophomore defender Joe Gula (New Market, Md. / Oakdale) headed the ball into the top right corner off a throw in from senior defender Jah-heem Lawitz (Albany, N.Y./Albany) to tie the game.

Oneonta retaliated eight minutes later when they scored from 25-yards out to put the ball into the far right corner out of the keepers reach.

As the clock wound down tensions grew higher as Plattsburgh State was trying to get another goal to tie and Oneonta was trying to maintain their lead. There were ten more fouls between the two teams, one yellow and one red.

The Cardinals had three opportunities to tie the game but could not find the back of the net with one shot being blocked and two being saved.

Eventually tempers flared and after a foul and yellow card on Oneonta, Plattsburgh State received a red card with less than one minute remaining.

Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) recorded four saves in his 90:00 in net and unfortunately took the loss.

Oneonta out-shot Plattsburgh State 16-13 and recorded 11 corner kick compared to the Cardinals four.

Senior defender Elver Maldonado (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck), Senior forward Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and sophomore midfielder Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) made the 2017 SUNYAC All-Tournament team.

The Cardinals now await their fate, which will be determined when the selections for the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament are announced Monday morning. Plattsburgh State must receive an at-large bid to participate in the NCAA tournament.
