No. 1 Women’s Hockey Claims East-West Hockey Classic Championship with Win over No. 4 Norwich

College Hockey Stats Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The No. 1 Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team scored in the first and third periods to take a 3-1 win over No. 4 Norwich University in Sunday's seventh annual East-West Hockey Classic championship game at Kreitzberg Arena. Plattsburgh State, which defended its Classic title, moves to 12-1 on the season, while Norwich slides to 9-2-1. Both Plattsburgh State's and Norwich's rankings are according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.

Plattsburgh State sophomore Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) scored twice and junior Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) netted one goal, while senior Jordan Lipson (Davis, Calif./Pomfret School), junior Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Milbrook School), sophomores Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy), Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) and freshman Hannah Kiraly (Newport Beach, Calif./Northern Cyclones) each assisted. Senior Camille Leonard (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) stopped 17 shots for the win. Kiraly, Lipson and Moriarty were all named to the all-tournament team, with Moriarty grabbing most valuable player honors.

With Sunday's victory, Leonard secured her 62nd career win in net and she is now tied with Carolyne Roy '05 for second in school history. Sydney Aveson '14 holds the program's career mark with 69 wins.

Norwich junior Erin Joyce scored with help from sophomore Robyn Foley and junior Nicole Goebel, while junior Sarah Schwenzfeier won nine faceoffs. Starting goalie senior Celeste Robert was tagged with the loss after allowing two goals on three shots in the opening 10:33 before junior Laurie King collected 16 saves over the remaining 49:27 in relief. King and freshman Sophie McGovern were selected to the all-tournament team.

Plattsburgh State struck for the game's first goal just 51 seconds into play as Millen's feed from the left halfboard glanced off of Moriarty's stick and into the left side of the net. Moriarty struck again at 10:33 by sending a point slapshot through traffic and between Robert's legs as the Cardinals went up, 2-0. Schwenzfeier tried to trim the deficit by shoveling a shot through the Cardinal defense, but Leonard kicked away the opportunity with 6:21 to go.

During a scoreless second period, Schwenzfeier again looked to break through just 12 seconds into the stanza but her tipped shot was cradled by Leonard. Plattsburgh State senior Erin Brand (Long Beach, N.Y./Syracuse) then had her point wrist shot gobbled up by King at 2:18.The defensive and goaltending battle continued as Norwich junior Muranda Toews darted up the right side at 11:14 before Leonard gloved the high shot.

After a 0-for-4 power-play showing through the first two periods, Norwich capitalized on its fifth player advantage and trimmed the score to 2-1 at 10:37. Goebel fed a quick left side pass up to Foley and Foley's point shot through traffic was redirected in midair by Joyce into the upper left corner. A late Norwich penalty, however, allowed Plattsburgh State to possess the puck and Meneghin sealed the decision with a power-play goal with 45.3 seconds remaining as she picked up her own rebound and deposited a low shot inside the left post.

Plattsburgh State returns home next weekend for a pair of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West games, beginning with Chatham University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
