Sheeran’s Record-Tying Outing Propels No. 1 Women’s Hockey to Conference Win over Chatham

College Hockey Stats Box Score

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey junior Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) tied the program's single-game points and goals records with seven points and four goals in the top-ranked Cardinals' 10-0 win against Chatham University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West play at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena on Saturday. Plattsburgh State, which was playing at home for the first time since Dec. 3, improves to 13-1 overall and 7-1 in the league, while Chatham slips to 5-8-1 and 0-6-1. The Cardinals' ranking is according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.

Five Cardinals registered multi-point efforts on the day. In addition to Sheeran's seven points on four goals and three assists, junior Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) matched a personal career-best with five points on three goals and two assists, while freshman Sarah Wolf (Fairport, N.Y./Boston Shamrocks Elite U-19) had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) dished three assists and classmate Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) provided two helpers. Seniors Melissa Ames (Rochester, N.Y./Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U-19) and Jordan Lipson (Davis, Calif./Pomfret School) scored once, while classmate Julia Duquette (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Buffalo Bisons U-19), junior Megan Crandell (Fullerton, Calif./Saint Norbert) and sophomore Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy) each contributed one assist. Senior Camille Leonard (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) turned in a 10-save shutout for the 26th cleansheet of her career.

Sheeran's seven points tied her with Jenn Clarke '06, Elizabeth Gibson '05 and Jessica Moreau '07 for the program's single-game points record. Gibson twice logged seven points in 2002, while Moreau reached the feat in 2003 and Clarke was the most recent having done so in 2005. Sheeran joins Gibson, Laurie Bowler '10, Gina Kozar '09, Shannon Stewart '15 and Chelsea VanGlahn '14 as the only Cardinals to pot four goals in a game. With Saturday's win in net, Leonard notched her 63rd career victory to break a tie with Carolyne Roy '05 for second in school history. Sydney Aveson '14 holds the program's career mark with 69 wins. Meneghin's five points on Saturday upped her career point total to 127 and pushed her past Bridget Balisy '16 for eighth in school annals. Meneghin is also tied with Jessica Moreau '07 and Lynn Taylor '05 for ninth in school history in career goals (58).

Chatham seniors Michelle Jones and Erika Martin both won eight faceoffs and junior Sydney Isbell collected 35 saves.

Plattsburgh State pumped in four first-period goals. Sheeran opened the scoring with a high-slot that went into the top left corner at 7:38. Lipson tallied at 12:46 when she let loose a left-side wrist shot that mirrored Sheeran's placement into the top left corner. Sheeran scored the next two goals to round out her hat trick, the latter coming with two seconds left in the stanza.

Five more Cardinal goals were scored during a 19-shot second period. Sheeran again found the back of the net just 16 seconds into play before Meneghin clicked off three consecutive goals in a 1:45 span. Ames buried a shot at 14:21 as the hosts took a 9-0 lead into the second intermission. Wolf's marker at 16:35, which was the first of her collegiate career, was the lone goal of the third period.

Plattsburgh State is back again tomorrow to face Chatham at 2 p.m.
