Sheeran Scores Four Times, Abbott Turns in First-Career Shutout as No. 1 Women’s Hockey Beats SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey junior Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) netted four goals and sophomore Kassi Abbott (North Billerica, Mass./Boston Shamrocks Elite U-19) recorded her first-career shutout as the top-ranked Cardinals beat SUNY Cortland, 7-0, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's West play at the Alumni Ice Arena Friday evening. The Cardinals move to 17-1 overall and 11-1 in the league, while the Red Dragons slide to 2-15 and 1-10. Plattsburgh State's ranking is according to the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
 
Sheeran potted four goals for the second time this season en route to logging her third hat trick for Plattsburgh State. Junior Kayla Meneghin (Clifton, N.J./The Gunnery) contributed four assists, while senior Erin Brand (Long Beach, N.Y./Syracuse) had two goals and one assist. Senior Jordan Lipson (Davis, Calif./Pomfret School) scored once, while sophomore Maci Hoskins (Oklahoma City, Okla./Northwood School) provided three assists. Junior Megan Crandell (Fullerton, Calif./Saint Norbert), sophomore Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School) and freshman Meghan Kraus (Fort Lewis, Wash./Northern Cyclones) all dished one helper. Sophomore Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North America Hockey Academy) won 10 faceoffs and Abbott turned in a 13-save shutout for the first clean sheet of her career.
 
Sheeran notched the 20th game-winning goal of her career to tie Danielle Blanchard '09 for the program's career mark, while Meneghin upped her career assists to 74 to tie Stephanie Moberg '10 for sixth in program history. Meneghin also increased her career point total to 134 and jumped past Moberg (133) for seventh in school history.
 
Cortland freshman Miranda Kolb won 10 draws and senior Kelly Farinella was tagged with the loss after stopping 27 shots over the first two periods. Freshman Rachael Farmer made 11 saves in the third period.
 
Plattsburgh State owned a 1-0 lead after a 21-shot first period. Sheeran's goal at 18:40 gave the visitors the late-period lead. The Cardinals then clicked off five second-period tallies. Lipson found the back of the net at 2:15 before Sheeran scored at 4:44 and 9:30 to round out the hat trick. Brand buried goals at 11:21 and 13:34 as the Cardinals led, 6-0, after two periods. Abbott stopped eight shots during the middle stanza. Sheeran closed out the scoring with a marker at 4:29 of the third period.
 
Plattsburgh State faces Cortland tomorrow at 2 p.m. in another ECAC Women's West contest.
